Merged Chick Tracts

My past as a roleplayer gave me an early awareness of Mr Chick's work (Dark Dungeons), so I probably should've been clearer with my last comment.
I simply meant that I couldn't see his angle, as I can't believe that he has much success with his tracts.
He's still going though, which suggests that either they work or he thinks they do.
AFAIK, Chick Tracts "work" in the sense of making money for Jack Chick. I doubt he ever converted a single non-believer with them, but believers (of Jack Chick's variety) eat it up.

The utter immorality of Chick's doctrine practically defies belief. People are saved or fry in hell quite regardless of their thoughts or deeds. They either believe in Jesus and are saved, or they don't, and fry. It's revolting, but regrettably familiar as a traditionalist doctrine. How it could have taken hold on so many minds baffles me.
Chick Tracts have always seemed to me like just the longest-running appeal to Pascal's Wager ever. The appeal, I think, is in the simplicity- the reason it's taken hold on so many minds is because there are so many simple ones to appeal to.

Sermons are always preached to keep the converted, converted.

Sermon outline:

1. Define the enemy

2. Tell your congregation how smart they are to believe and how severely the enemy will be punished.*

3. Profit!

*ETA: one and two may be repeated over and over with small variations till you sense it's time for three.

To be fair, most Christians don't believe or support the things that Chick says in his tracts either.
Very true. As many know, I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian home, that theologically would have had a lot of ideas in common with Jack Chick...yet my parents told me that his stuff amounted to hate literature, and actually used some of his pamphlets to teach me how not to deal with non-Christians.

Unfortunately I suspect that the church I used to attend would have wholeheartedly endorsed Chick's work.

Does the cat have a name, I think the dog is Fang.
I think about half my posts on JREF have been about Fang. I have an unhealthy obsession with him.

As to the cat, in the Mega Chick Thread I dubbed him - her? - Rapey Cat, although Paul2 picked up on my reference to The Cat Whose Name I Don't Know, abbreviating it to TCWNIDK, pronounced, I guess, TikWinaDick. Feel free to use either one. :D

In War Games, we discover that Fang can say "Aii! Aii!" when a cat tries to rape him. Your Best Life ignores Fang (as did the original, This Was Your Life), so I ignore it.

Blackleaf! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! :D

I find it interesting that Chick seems to think that his religion is obviously the correct one, as a Muslim who is shown Heaven immediately thinks, "Oh, why did I not believe that Christian who told me about Jesus once?" instead of "Well how the Hell was I supposed to know that the one Protestant Christian was right, and the Catholics, the Sunnis, the Shias, the Jews and everyone else was wrong??"

Being the only two believable characters in the tracts could explain the fascination.

A Fang Fan club?

When I was taking drawing lessons years ago as a hobby, I considered doing an "anti-chick" series of tracts, matching one-for-one, but reversing the situation.

The only complication is that I couldn't do an 'afterlife regret' for the tract where a Christian doesn't deconvert to atheism.

Meh. That's pretty common. I remember the moment I realized it was pointless to debate doorknocking JWs... they have no ability to consider themselves possibly wrong.

Specifically, they were trying Pascal's Wager on me: what if I was wrong about being an atheist? I turned the question around: what if you're wrong and God wants you to be Muslim? Their answer: "Oh, well, we know we're not wrong."

Ah. I see.

Putting my Crazy Whisperer hat on for a moment, the reason Chick and those of his ilk don't think this is that to them, the Truth is immediately obvious. Catholicism isn't Truth, Islam isn't Truth. The only way to Truth is through Jesus, and once you're going through Jesus, then the right way is shown to you. Jesus can't show different right ways to different people - that would be absurd.

Wow, stab from the past. Your review is still hilarious, and I'm still proud of giving the feline it's abbreviation TCWNIDK. May TCWNIDK and Fang live on.

Say what you will about Chick; his caricatures are spot-on ...

Especially that "evolutionist" college professor in Big Daddy.

That's what THEY look like, all right. :p
