I know the data is pretty clear that glucosamine and chondroitin don't really help human arthritis in placebo-controlled studies, but I hear persistent rumors that it works for dogs. This topic was broached a few years ago on this forum, but the thread seemed to die without any links to solid evidence. I'm wondering if there is any new information on this.

IIRC, it's only been proven useful on horse knees. And since both constituents are animal products, and horses are vegetarians, that makes sense.

The new information is that the traditional glucosamine / chondroitin supplements are now being fortified with essential fatty acids (EHA / DPA), which is showing some promise in being anti-inflammatory.

Glucosamine et al on their lonesome still thoroughly unproven. Any effect confounded by the cyclical nature of degenerative joint disease. I tell my clients that I could advise them to sacrifice a bag of Jelly Tots every 92.5hrs and within twelve weeks 15% of them will think I am a genius in 'curing' their dog's osetoarthritis.

I am SO stealing that.
