So apparently Utah's amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman has been struck down by a federal judge as unconstitutional. So I suppose we're at 18 states (and one district) and counting (although Utah is going to try very very hard to reinstate it apparently).

And sets precedent for challenges to the other states who have written amendments into their state constitutions defining marriage as between a man and a woman (of which there are a lot: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming). If this case makes it all the way to the SCOTUS and they rule that the decision must stand, that's another 32 states that would lose such an argument. Meaning the entire country finally has to admit it's legal!

It's very good news if it sticks, and I suspect that after a period of poo flinging it will, because when it comes right down to it nothing much changes except for the obvious improvement for some people.

Eventually the future will be far enough in the past that even the opponents of gay marriage will have to stop yelling "what if what if."

Eventually, all of the American states will come around and, eventually but belatedly, they will meet Canada's standards and expectations on the issue of same sex marriage.

Some of the states will be slow about it, as usual, and some of them will be dragged into the 21st century kicking and screaming as noted above, but they will all come around whether logically & voluntarily as some have done to date or, alternatively, involuntarily by SCOTUS edict, within the next few years. Better late than never, at least.

And, if the nearly nine years of experience with same-sex marriage in Canada is any indication, society will not collapse into anarchy and people will simply go about their lives. Heterosexual marriages will still take place, babies will still be born, etcetera and so forth.

In striking down the state law, which voters had approved in 2004, U.S. District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby wrote in a 53-page ruling that the state's "current laws deny its gay and lesbian citizens their fundamental right to marry and, in so doing, demean the dignity of these same-sex couples for no rational reason.

That line has got to sting the LDS hard liners in Utah. All their reasons to deny same sex marriage are just a cover for the tiresome religious doctrine they have tried to impose on the general public. Essentially, they have no alternative but to hear a federal judge telling them that their religion based objection is irrational.
