The government. They'd been trying to get him to leave the prison for ages but he refused until they freed the other political prisoners as I recall the story.
The government would rather have him free than as a cause celebre for an armed insurrection. That's the way it was related to me by an Afrikaans friend when I was there during apartheid... but before Mandela was released.
I'm sure that's not the answer you were looking for, but if you change "the government" to "race traitor" with your unique filters, it'll work. But, no,... it wasn't Pol Pot and Stalin.

When MaGZ refers to "powers behind the scene" he's usually alluding to some more specific sort of conspiracy. I wonder who he has in mind now. Surely not a Judaeo-Bolshevik World Conspiracy. But let him tell us in his own good time.

Having just come back from a four day survey on Robben Island, I can tell you it must have been the penguins. They are slowly taking over the prison buildings for nesting purposes. Springing the prisoners was a sensible first step.

The question is ****-about-face. It should be about what the pressures were on the apartheid government to release Mandela, and we could then discuss the end of the proxy wars on SA's borders as a result of the end of the Cold War, and the role of Britain post-Thatcher, and the effect of sanctions, and the fear of an armed uprising and so on. There was also the question of just realising that the game was up.

OMG, that makes perfect sense! Who else* had as much to gain from the end of Apartheid than penguins? They are black and white.

I'm presuming that MaGZ is "doing a Rifkind" and insisting that the true heroes of the struggle against apartheid are the white Afrikaner politicians like de Klerk who finally released Mandela rather than suggesting that it was da joooz behind it all (so it's the the racist rather than the anti-Semite on show here)
If this is his intention, I don't have any great problem with it. de Klerk, while flawed in many ways, did play a significant role in ending apartheid. No where near that of Mandala, but still important.
In much the same way that Gorbachev did the unthinkable in the USSR, so did de Klerk. At least in my very limited and remote view.....

Pretty much spot on. It took great courage for him to stand up to his own party and cabinet. Although as someone else said, at that point the writing was more or less on the wall already.

IIRC, it was because the government attached ropes to the earlier proposals of his release, in particular that he would denounce armed struggle. In the end, they released him unconditionally.
