Satanic Statue In Oklahoma

Satanists want statue beside Ten Commandments monument at Oklahoma Legislature

So after the republican run legislature puts up a 10 commandments monument, a New York Satanic group wants to put up a Satanic monument there as well.

It notified the state's Capitol Preservation Commission that it wants to donate a monument and plans to submit one of several possible designs this month, said Lucien Greaves, a spokesman for the temple.

Lucien Greaves, seriously?

Greaves said one potential design involves a pentagram, a satanic symbol, while another is meant to be an interactive display for children.

I want this to happen just to see exactly what a Satanic interactive display is.

Satanic Temple to get display at OK Statehouse

Oh I really hope this is the beginning of a trend :D

Oklahoma’s 10 Commandments To Get A Sister Memorial … From The Satanic Temple
Remember the Satanic Temple, which performed a ritual to turn Fred Phelps’ dead mother gay? They are still at it, now in Oklahoma. The Satanic Temple has filed the papers to put up a memorial on statehouse grounds, next to the state’s display of the 10 Commandments. They are doing this by citing Okla.’s religious displays legislation, signed into law in 2009. And they are absolutely serious about it. ...

Message to all the right-wing Christians who wish to force their religious displays on public land: be careful what you wish for... :popcorn1

Maybe if every religion in the world puts up a monument there, it will be so crowded with absurd visions of "God" that people won't actually be able to get into the Courthouse.

Kind of appropriate really, if that happened...

I think that atheists' should be allowed to put a statue of their own. Just a pedestal with nothing on it.

Nah, it will get to the point where there will be too many monuments up where they will be eyesores. It will get out of hand and nobody will get to put up "religious" displays. Then we will be back to the point of xians crying about intolerance all over again.

And they'd be right.

I got this from somewhere, for the express purpose of asking what each symbol represents. I only know a few.

Glad to see the Satanists holding up their end. It shouldn't always have to be the atheists pointing out that if you have one religous viewpoint on government property, you don't have any grounds to object to another religious viewpoint being represented just because it's a different one.

The battle over which Satan is the real or worst one to be honored.. that will take some time, looking back through history.

They are atheists.

I'm wondering if it's the Jewish or Christian concepion of Satan that will be used (Angel of God vs. fallen angel)?

How are satanists atheists? Satan is very much a god to them as Yahweh, Thor, or Ra is to those believers.

From my link earlier in the thread:

VICE: Is the Satanic Temple a satanic, or a satirical group?
Doug: That is a common question. I say why can’t it be both? We are coming from a solid philosophy that we absolutely believe in and adhere to. This is Satanism, and to us it couldn’t be called anything other than Satanism. However, our metaphor of Satan is a literary construct inspired by authors such as Anatole France and Milton – a rebel angel defiant of autocratic structure and concerned with the material world. Satanism as a rejection of superstitious supernaturalism. This Satan, of course, bears no resemblance to the embodiment of all cruelty, suffering, and negativity believed in by some apocalyptic segments of Judeo-Christian culture. The word Satan has no inherent value. If one acts with compassion in the name of Satan, one has still acted with compassion. Our very presence as civic-minded socially responsible Satanists serves to satirise the ludicrous superstitious fears that the word Satan tends to evoke.

Can you give me a bit of background information on the temple? Do you consider yourselves activists?
The Satanic Temple was actually conceived of independent from me by a friend and one of his colleagues. They envisioned it more as a “poison pill” in the Church/State debate. The idea was that Satanists, asserting their rights and privileges where religious agendas have been successful in imposing themselves upon public affairs, could serve as a poignant reminder that such privileges are for everybody, and can be used to serve an agenda beyond the current narrow understanding of what “the” religious agenda is. So at the inception, the political message was primary, though it was understood that there are, in fact, self-identified Satanists who live productive lives within the boundaries of the law, and that they do deserve just as much consideration as any other religious group. I was brought in originally as a consultant due to my expertise in the history of witch hunts and my understanding regarding conceptions of Satanism. While the original thinking was that the Satanic Temple needed to hold to some belief in a supernatural entity known as “Satan”, none of us truly believed that. I helped develop us into something we all do truly believe in and wholeheartedly embrace: an atheistic philosophical framework that views “Satan” as a metaphorical construct by which we contextualise our works. We’ve moved well beyond being a simple political ploy and into being a very sincere movement that seeks to separate religion from superstition and to contribute positively to our cultural dialogue. To this end, I am very much an activist.

I'm not an expert but I believe there are several types of Satanists. Perhaps there are some that acknowlege God as good and Satan as evil and worship him anyway but I'm not convinced this type exists outside of high school. My understanding is that most are either Pagans that rebranded Satan as a good guy and atheists that are simply out for a laugh. I think this group is the latter.

Actually, if the Christians get to put their 10 commandments there, can we please also get the eight Pastafarian "I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts" there too?
