Rand Paul: I'm Not A Crook

"Ah - HEM. Can I have the chair's attention please?"

"At this time I ask unanimous consent to revise and extend my remarks in the Congressional Record."

"Hearing no objection, so ordered. Will the gentleman from Kentucky be quoting Wikipedia?"

"Darn tootin'."

Rachel Maddow documents is quite thoroughly.

Indeed. I saw her show last Tuesday and became aware of it then (though that was for the Stand and Deliver plagiarism).

My point to eeyore was is he thought this was much ado about nothing, he's not been paying attention to the news (or only to FobamacareX News I suppose).

I understand that it can be confusing to keep track of which episodes of the Senator's plagiarism we're discussing, but I wasn't talking about his editorials.

And I understand that satirical humor doesn't always convey on the Internet. The joke was that he's not going to blame his staff (which he had done and still does), but that his excuse for not being more on top of his speech/book/Op Ed writing was the hectic schedule of being a freshman Senator from KY. That was why I wrote "in light" of both your and Tricky's posts. I wasn't directly responding to them.

Paul partly blamed the errors on his hectic schedule, saying sometimes he has to read and approve the text of articles or speeches in 20 minutes.

“We write something every week for The Washington Times, and I literally am riding around in a car in between things trying to figure out if I can approve it,” He said.

My point was that if he can't handle the schedule of being a freshman Sen. from KY - or worse - is so bad with time management that he takes too much on to his plate, how the heck is he going to handle being president? Turns out he's got a Palinesque plan for when it gets too hot in the kitchen.

“It’s also what people hate about politics, and it’s why, frankly, members of my family are not too interested in politics, period, or wanting me to do more of this,” he said. “To tell you the truth, people can think what they want, I can go back to being a doctor anytime, if they’re tired of me. I’ll go back to being a doctor, and I’ll be perfectly content.”

First - after hiding away for days and not responding -- and then finally having to respond, Rand Paul lashed out at the people who caught him,

then went jump-shark loony by saying he would like to put a bullet or a sword in the chest of his accusers -

then was all bah bah footnote police *******s!, whereupon he finally started owning up to it, after he blamed his staff of course

and now it's a divot to a W-inspired "it's hard work!" with Paul claiming with allllllllllllllllllllllllllll a junior senator has to do, his time management skillz have pressed him balls to the wall Too Busy! Too Busy! to write authentic material while taking credit for others works.

Hear that? He's got too much on to his plate as a junior senator --- as the background music of Hail to the Chief echoes in his ears and a Paul 2016 poster waves in the background...

And finally, his last two original quotes said in response to this cluster (yes, really for true) were these...

"leave me the hell alone"

and

"I’ll go back to being a doctor."

And you can quote me on that.

That one was plagiarized from here: http://www.dailypress.net/page/cont...-re-elections--shrugs-off-polls.html?nav=5009

It's another politician, Michigan Congressman Dan Benishek, in 2012.
"This isn't a career for me. I'm just putting in my time here and hopefully it will last the three terms that I'm willing to serve, and if not, then I'll go back to being a doctor," he said.

Benishek didn't have to go back to medicine, he won the election. Constituents of his district say, "Instead of ruining people's lives one at a time as a physician, in Congress he can do it by the thousands."

Uh, Jeez. Is it time already to strike R. Paul from the 2016 Primaries list?

Not sure many people care about plagiarism outside of academia as long as it's not done in such a way to piss off the RIAA.

Well, I'm one of 'em.

Proper attribution is such a simple thing to do that there really isn't any good excuse not to do it.

And there is nothing intrinsically wrong with offering other peoples' ideas ... as long as you give them credit for it. It doesn't make you less knowledgeable or authoritative.

I, for one, have a great deal of respect for the people who can aggregate and compare material that I might not get exposed to when left to my own devices. Those people also provide me with sources so that I can pursue topics further if I choose to. That's if they don't steal the material and represent it as their own.

The only reason for plagiarism is self-aggrandizement. And it is theft, pure and simple.

Sometimes plagiarism is difficult to avoid, because there's many people that think alike in terms of certain ideas... not to excuse it or anything... But Paul would have come across all the better had he just said that indeed he made a mistake by not attributing the content to its original source. The weaseling around just fans the flames and digs the hole deeper that he doesn't have original ideas... IE... this is a scandal he made worse when he could have ended it relatively quick.

He could apologize his way out of a single incident, but he's a serial abuser. And it's all in the permanent record, just waiting to be uncovered. The flames from the actual crime are hotter than the weaseling in this case. Though the weaseling is fun to watch -- it makes him stupid, like he can't grasp the simple concept of what plagiarism is.
