Rand Paul: I'm Not A Crook

Rand Paul Aide Admits To Bad Sourcing After Plagiarism Allegations

Ah, so NOW he's coming to terms with it. He knew a **** storm was brewing and some serious damage control was finally necessary.

In time-honored fashion as well.

He blamed his flunkies staff.

Classy, Senator. Real classy. That's the way to reclaim the moral high ground. I wonder if he has a placard on his desk, "The buck stops over there somewhere."

I should have said, "he now OUGHT to expect," yes. So I messed up; SHUT UP!!

That last line is from Eddie Murphy. See how easy it is to credit a source?

There are a lot of things about this "scandal" that are more troubling than a non-attributed quotation. For one thing, I have yet to read a Wikipedia article that I'd WANT to pass off as my own. Most are badly written and flow poorly. It would be like plagiarizing a "joke" from Will Ferrell.

But the thing that is so puzzling is that people caught red-handed actually DENY it or blame someone who had no connection to the offense. This is what Rand Paul did, and I deem it a serious flaw in his character and personal integrity.
Not only deny it, but want to take to putting a bullet or a deadly sword through the chest of one of the persons who revealed his theft.

It's an "honor" thing, you see?

Rand Paul did admit, in an interview, that the speeches "had input from several sources", meaning he actually didn't write all of it. Maybe not any of it. So really, his speechwriters plagiarized Wikipedia, not him. He just repeated it. Which make it even more unfathomable that he would respond with an angry attack. Everybody knows politicians use "research departments" to ghost their speeches. Rand could have fingered them (rightfully) and escaped with minor damage.

ETA: Oops. I see this has already broken.

Hey any good libertarian is going to externalize his liabilities just like any other bad thing.

Not seeing the scandal here. Does plagiarism make one unfit for high public office?

Plagiarism alone? Probably not but you might get a different answer from an English teacher.

What makes him unfit is his reaction. Expressing a desire to kill the people responsible for criticizing him. I know to some that makes him sound tough but to most people it makes him look weak and stupid. If he can't handle criticism without voicing a desire for violence he shouldn't be in public office.

Someone ought to ask Paul, "Did you see the goddamned movie or not??" It is super-easy to avoid plagiarism by doing your own goddamned work and writing or speaking about it in your own goddamned words, Senator.

More ****. Fan. Spraying.....thmppttttpppptttt

Washington Times ends Sen. Rand Paul column amid plagiarism allegations:
http://goo.gl/G5zMb0

Quote:
The Washington Times said Tuesday it had independently reviewed Mr. Paul’s columns and op-eds and published a correction to one column on Sept. 20 in which the senator had failed to attribute a passage that first appeared in Forbes.

The newspaper and the senator mutually agreed to end his weekly column, which has appeared on each Friday in the newspaper since the summer.

When you've lost the Moonies,....Yow. Holy Paularoni!

(In before reading the following posts.)

Nice set-up. Did anyone take the bait so that you can Gotcha! with the Joe Biden card?

Stay tuned and let's see, viewers. Will Annie get off the cliff an save Sandy from the German spies? Tune in next post to see.... And drink chocolate-y Ovaltine.

ETA: That'll teach me!
My sincere apologies to ravdin. Just looked like a tu quoque set-up. I'll shut up, now that I've made an idiot of myself.

I don't think he has, which is why he basically read a synopsis from Wikipedia (in a very awkward manner that didn't really seem to flow naturally during his speech, IMO). There's one subtle but somewhat humorous tell: when describing the scene where Vincent was caught taking one final exam before boarding his rocket, Rand mentioned the doctor telling Vincent about his son, then he says "without another word the doctor changes the result and" blah blah blah. The "without another word" part is false. I know this because a) Gattaca is one of my favorite movies, and b) the doctor does not change the result "without another word", but changes it after giving one of the best lines of the movie: "for future reference, right-handed men don't hold it with their left". It seems odd that Rand would forget such a memorable (IMO) line.

In other words: Rand Paul is a hack.

Is there a Wikipedia page that lists incidents of Wikipedia plagiarism?

He has resorted to lamenting that dueling isn't legal, as if his honor is so besmirched by the accusation as to warrant pistols at 20 paces.

Yes, yes that was a cool quote you put in - love that film!!!!!

ETA: Yes, it is indeed a Big Country!!!

I don't think what he did with the Wikipedia article was bad. This could be because I don't know the extent of how much he did. I thought it was a few lines describing the plot in a speech.

This story broke a week ago. Perhaps you could have done a Google search for Rand Paul Plagiarism before poo pooing it and engaging in tu quoque.

Rare Truth already linked to the story, but I just wanted to post another link in light of quadraginta and Tricky's posts. How is he going to pass this buck to his flunkies? He's not. In this case he claims that the work being 1/100th of 1/2 of 1/3 of the government is so hectic and stressful, he couldn't write an editorial without plagiarizing an entire paragraph. And this guy wants to be president.

Offering a little help. :)

It's no surprise Rand's an irrational fantasist, having been raised by one.

Paul's latest reaction in a NYT interview: he'll be adding footnotes so people...

"Leave me the hell alone"

Kay. We'll remind you of that senator when you try to become pres.
