The Subconscious

How do we know the unconscious subconscious exists if the whole idea behind it is not being able to bring it into consciousness?

Maybe a more educated person can help me with my dilema...

Welcome to JREF and please allow me to try to answer your question.

When one is 'unconscious' then one is unaware, is not conscious, or something similar. And such states are quite common such as when one is sleeping, in a coma, has fainted, and so on. Therefore, we can be sure that the unconscious exists.

Does this answer your question?

It's what most people experience in deep sleep and under anesthesia (which they don't really understand either). This is my understanding of it. I was put under on more than one occasion and the only thing I noticed was that it seemed some time had passed but I experienced nothing. I definitely had the sense of time but I remember nothing after I was wheeled down the hall to the operating room until I came to in the recovery room with massive pain.

Your understanding of consciousness is wrong, so your premise makes no sense.

Consciousness is simply a function of our brain. When we are awake, we are conscious of the world around us. When we are asleep, we are still alive, but not totally aware of the world around us. We are unconscious.

That's it.

I have a small nagging feeling that you might mean the 'subconscious'?

Yes, this is what I meant. My apologies.
EDIT: Going to change thread title and content.

Rats and there I thought I had the answer for you. On this one, there is tremendous debate, in fact, it's another religious issue.

Ok, please define "subconscious."

Do you mean something like this: "The subconscious mind stores information that the conscious mind may not immediately process with full understanding, but it stores the information for later retrieval when ”recalled” by the conscious mind" Wiki Link

Its like a car passes you by, but you are looking at your phone. 5 minutes later, you wonder what color the car was. You weren't really paying attention, but your brain may have stored that info. Or it may not have. Was it red or was it blue? Are you sure?

Thanks for the correction.

Unforturnately, my training is such issues is quite scant, so I hope that someone who knows this issue chimes in with a good reply because this is a good question.

Something like that and the whole repressed feelings / Freudian psychology thing. If that makes any sense...? The part of that wiki article that intrigued me is where it says "focal awareness". In order for us to say something exists shouldnt we be aware of said thing.
