What to do with people that murder pets?

This thread should serve as proof that there are people out there who really do have the mindset of, "Meh, it's just a cat/dog, who cares?"

I tend to keep such people at arm's length and interact with them for strictly professional purposes.

What if people were expressing the joys of cat-bacon?

I suspect that most people who have actually experienced the joy of children would laugh at the idea that a cat is even remotely comparable, emotionally.

Well, I thought that until my children went wandering off in the shop we were in. I was distraught at the thought I would never see them again, but fortunately it was in a pet shop, and wiping my tears away I gazed into the nearest cage to see two wittle ickle kittens. With all my fears about my children vanquished from my mind I gleefully picked up the cage and strode over to the cashier slapping down a number of bills and confidently proclaiming, "These shall replace the fruit of my loons!" and without stopping to pick up my change I made my way to the door. I then turned back to the cashier to let him know that he might find my children lurking somewhere among the bric-a-brac and that if he did he should contact me to tell me what price he got for them.

Travis, I can't contribute to the thread really but wanted to send my condolences. I'm sorry to hear about your loss :(.

Just use Warfarin. It can't be a legit poison if it is inhumane.

Now that's a whole other argument. It's not actually as inhumane as you may think, when used on rats and mice, but I agree there is a double standard at work. As there is with the mousetrap.

Rolfe.

I agree.

It should also serve as proof that people will jump to conclusions based purely on emotion.
There is no evidence to suggest that the cat was shot on Travis', or anyone's property.
There is no evidence to suggest it was shot whilst sunning itself on a lawn.
There has been mention of drag marks and speculation of the cat being hit by a car, suggesting that the cat was on the road at some stage, and also hints at the cat trying to get home after being wounded. (as they tend to do)
There was speculation (neither confirmed or denied by Travis) that he lives in a rural area. If so;
There may be a legitimate reason for someone shooting the cat.

Or it could have happened the way Travis imagines ....

Travis. Would your 10 year sentence apply to a 15 y.o? Would you try him as an adult due to the severity of the crime?

I'm not trying to be callous. I don't like cats much, but I grew up with them as pets. I'm an animal lover at heart.

I live in a rural area and I have 2 hunting dogs. Very well trained as far what they can and can't hunt. I worry about them escaping their yard and being shot. I know they wouldn't touch anyone's pets or stock, but I can't expect everyone to know that. If you see a big dog in your sheep paddock, you have every justification to shoot it. If you see a cat in your chicken coop ....

If none of this is relevant, please explain.

I hope this isn't construed as a direct attack on the OP, but I'd like to go on record as saying that many of his views expressed in this thread are terrifying, ridiculous and a possible indicator of psychological problems.

I'm sorry that his cat was killed; but the man is suggesting 10 years to life for hurting animals, including hunters; comparing animal cruelty to rape; and insisting that a cat is as worthwhile, if not more so, than most people.

If he was just lamenting the death of his pet I could understand all the kid gloves handling by posters, but his views are, frankly, outrageous.

PS - Speaking of removing people from society (and this is merely a tangent, directed at no-one in particular). I've always felt that people who make statements equating animals as equal to or superior to humans, or saying they think little of other humans but love animals, should be removed from the social compact, and all of its inherent benefits.

If their boat sinks, they should ask a passing dolphin to rescue them. If they fall and break their leg, they should ask the wolves to lick the wound better.

I should add; it sucks how it went down, and I do empathise with losing a pet. Especially when it suffered. I forgot to say that in my rant.

Regardless of why or where the cat was shot, it was a low act to gut shoot it.

One can feel equally protective of two things. For example if someone were to try to steal my car or television, i would attempt to stop them, possibly using physical violence. But said violence would be tempered in regards to not permanently damaging said person, and wouldbe avoided if the person in question WA vastly physically superior to myself, or armed . But if someone was to attempt to harm a member of my family , or a pet then my physical intervention would disregard both of those factors, and i would use any weaponry, environmental or manufactured for use as a weapon, at my disposal. This does not mean that i think my parents and cats are equal, simply that i feel equally protective of them.

I'm in the US, and it's common to let cats roam here. But I'm of the opinion that it shouldn't be, for much the same reason that it shouldn't be acceptable to let your dog run around. I really don't get why we have a double standard there.
Because cats are not humans. Saying we shouldn't do something to a cat because we wouldn't do it with a woman is ridiculous. We do all kinds of things with cats that we don't do with women.

Get it yet?
Cats are not humans. And dogs are not cats. So simple it hurts.

First, you're several pages late. I acknowledged that I was ignoring at least one important difference between cat and dog behaviors back at the top of page two, and haven't brought up the issue since.

Second, cats and dogs are treated far more similarly under the law than cats and humans are, making the area(s) where they're treated differently stand out. If there were a host of legal differences between them then I wouldn't have been as confused by this particular difference, but as it's the only major legal difference I'm aware of it seemed odd.

Dogs are not allowed to roam because of the potential that they may be a problem

Dogs may defecate anywhere
Dogs may attack people or animals
Dogs may dig up gardens
Dogs may run onto the road
Dogs may spread disease.

Cats are allowed to roam despite the fact they can be a problem
Cats may deficate anywhere
Cats may attack people or animals
Cats may dig up gardens
Cats may run onto the road
Cats may spread disease.

Why the double standard?
