Post-revolution polls in Egypt

That sound you hear is the Egyptian Economy tanking as hundred of cancellations of Trips to Egypt take place.....

Comment, in re a line cited over the cost of recent unrest in Egypt:

30 people dead
A once a week event in Iraq these days, car bomb ... I guess Egypt just isn't used to the cost of democracy yet.
Male protesters are now forming human chains around the female protesters to avoid more attacks. Sad that this is necessary.
I put those men at the top of my list of "what it means to be a man" in any culture. Well done to them!

In one article it was mentioned that the Dutch lady was an intern.
Yes. Things might still be a lot worse now that the military has kicked Morsi out of power. But things definitely would be a whole lot worse if they hadn't.
No good choices, so make the best of a bad situation is what can be done, in the near term.

In the long term ... a non-zero chance of a civil war. Not a happy thought, at all. :(

The Egyptian military seems to have become the default check against anti-democratic factions taking over.

You seem to have not to notice the Egyptian military is part of the anti-democratic faction.
Like they said in Vietnam, "We had to burn the village to save it."

There is footage on Youtube of the assault on the Dutch lady, if you're in the mood to get whipped up into a blood-boiling rage.

Still there have been over 100 reported attacks in the last two weeks of protests.

I'm not blaming the victim, and I don't know for which organisation she was working, but WTF were these people thinking when they sent a young attractive woman into the gang-rape mosh-pit?
Especially with well know incidents of reporters being attacked.

This says something about the character of north Africans.
They even raped our Ambassador Stevens in Libya.

I think that and I'm not a Presstard.

Arabs aren't fit for democracy.

What about the non-White Third World in general? When you look at Africa, parts of South America and Asia you see few governments that are democratic. And what does this foretell to our own darkening democracy?

Even as tourism to Israel booms from one record quarter to the next. I know thelittlesatan is on the verge of complete collapse and all, but sometimes it's difficult to make out.

Seeing the tragic rape and slaughter of innocent people in Egypt makes me question whether an institutional program aimed at decreasing the rabid hatred of Jews, women and homosexuals might not improve the chances of not being raped, maimed or murdered while going about your business.

Yeah, I think that tourism has been down ever since the beginning of the so-called Arab Spring. There may not have been many trips booked by Westerners to begin with, and there probably won't be until things have really calmed down.

Personally, ever since the Luxor massacre, I wouldn't go there as a tourist. There would have to be a lot more stability before I'd even consider it.

ETA: a bit more on that:
Egypt travel advisories renewed in wake of violence

(CNN) -- Worsening violence amid anti-government protests in Egypt has led western governments to step up their travel advice.

Yesterday, at least 23 people were killed, and hundreds injured, in clashes between supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy at Cairo University.

Since then, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office is recommending "against all but essential travel to Egypt" except certain coastal resorts, where unrest is less evident.

Previously, the FCO advised travelers only to steer clear of "all demonstrations and large gatherings" within the country.

The U.S. State Department continues to advise against all "non-essential" travel to or within Egypt.

Tourism minister quits

Egypt's tourism industry suffered another blow Monday with the resignation of the country's tourism minister, Hisham Zazour.

Zazour handed in his resignation along with five other ministers, including the foreign minister, over the violence sweeping the country.

The present crisis was the last straw for a man with one of the toughest jobs in tourism. He had threatened to quit last month over the appointment as Luxor governor of a member of a political group associated with a massacre in the city 15 years ago that killed 58 tourists.

I got a bad feeling this won't end well.

At Least 43 Die as Soldiers Said to Open Fire on Morsi Backers

CAIRO — Egyptian soldiers opened fire on hundreds of unarmed supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi early Monday as they were praying before dawn outside the facility where he is believed to be detained, dozens of witnesses said.

At least 43 civilians were killed, all or most of them shot, and more than 300 wounded, doctors and health officials said. Security officials said one police officer died as well.

The attack marked a sharp escalation in the confrontation between the generals who forced out the president and his Islamist supporters in the streets.

The forming of an interim government isn't working out as the Islamists are not on board with the choice of leaders.
And the violence is escalating.

That is bad combination.

They better get the MB back in the political process and release Morsi & Co if they want to keep selling this as "not a military coup".

Yeah, they're caught between a rock and a hard place. The Salafists of al-Nour refuse to accept a government with El-Baradei (who the various Opposition factions finally managed to agree on as their representative), but if the army appoints him over their objections then the "unity" of the anti-Morsi groups will be shown up as hollow and false.

And so the interim government remains in limbo.

They better get the MB back in the political process and release Morsi & Co if they want to keep selling this as "not a military coup".

It would actually be easier for the army to just say "screw it, we're in charge, and SCAF has full executive and legislative powers again", but they really don't want to do that because then it sticks them with the responsibility of having to fix the security and economic messes in Egypt that turned the populace against Morsi in the first place. They want to remain aloof from all that, so the anger of the people doesn't get turned on them.

Which it might anyway, if things like the massacre above keep happening.

And I should care what Clownhall has to say about the First Fitna embodying Islam while the Inquisition was just an "aberration" in Christianity (while repeating the false claim that the person shown in the Syrian video was a priest as well as citing the ******** website religionofpeace.com) because...why, exactly?
Congratulations on reading it. :p

Even if it's the case that the Brotherhood seeded armed gunmen among the worshippers (which, frankly, would not surprise me, given the Brotherhood), that kind of response by the army portends very very bad things.

The army says they have 42 injured soldiers, eight of them in critical condition, in addition to the one dead.

It's possible that none of the parties are lying. In fact, this was exactly how the tragedy in Syria started. Unknown parties shooting at security AND protesters. One crucial event with comparable victim numbers which enormously escalated the situation happend on April 08, 2011 in Deraa. You can still see the masked sideline shooters in this AP video on the Washington Post website.

Unfortunately at this point it's very easy to fuel the Egyptian fire. Hopefully their announced investigation will be as transparent as possible.
