Proof of Life After Death!!

I was hoping that we could draw Robin into a discussion of the nitty gritty (proof via anecdotes vs. scientific method) by using a context that's less emotionally fraught than talking to the dead.
She would just agree with you, and claim she knows all about critical thinking and evidence. But JE, that is something different, because he is able - on occasion - to provide you with incredibly detailed statements that could only be provided by the dead, and you know it because you experience him live. The other psychics, pah, they are all frauds!

It has been tried. Nothing fruitful came out of it.

You forgot the 'even though the videos LOOK like JE is cold reading a mark, he really isn't' line.

Let me say just one word..........................refrigerators.

Now, if that's not enough proof for you, I guess you'll never open your mind to the fact of life, after death.

Refrigerators!!!

Even Robin accepted that sometimes JE resorted to cold reading. She always had an 'out' that could preserve her beliefs.

But on the other hand, she used that 'out' remarkably little. Usually, she would stick to her guns and defend the most outrageous examples of cold reading.

Why did Robin1 unregister? Does that bring any specific advantages or was she just making a statement?

As you know by now I don't really believe there is an afterlife. I'm quite fond of Linda Goodman's astrology books and she does seem to claim that there is some type of "heaven" and also an "astral plane" from which souls come to Earth. The problem is that she never presented a single, overarching theory about it that I know of, just included bits about the afterlife and pre-birth life in her books, which mainly focus on the zodiac signs. I have quite a high regard for Linda, although I am aware of the fact that it would be to her disadvantage to claim there is no afterlife. It would also be cruel, as many people are genuinely concerned about their deceased loved ones.

No, the problem is not the lack of a theory, the problem is the lack of evidence.

It would also be cruel, as many people are genuinely concerned about their deceased loved ones.
And you do not think it is cruel filling grieving people with baloney about their deceased loved ones?

In my opinion this Goodman type is a crook freely inventing garbage to prey on grieving people and trying to get rich on book sales.

The baloney they feed is mostly about refrigerators and other mundane things, so it hardly does a lot of damage. Saying the loved one is roasting in hell would be doing damage. In that sense the bible does a lot of damage, as I do have a cousin who terminated herself and is now supposed to be in hell. Her boyfriend's suicide followed soon after hers. Family members are not telling older ones about the second suicide as they claim it will totally shatter their faith in God. Thanks to the Bible we now have this secret in the family.

They also feed baloney about an afterlife, and how the loved ones are still loving the living ones, and watching over them. The damage is mainly economic. Is that all right, then?

You never hear the psychic saying, "Wow." "Sorry, but your family member was a sinner and is going to be tortured, and burning in hell, for all eternity."

"That will be $75.00, please."

Actually, it would be to Goodman's great advantage to claim there is or isn't an afterlife since any such claim she now makes would be proof of an afterlife. She died in 1995.

Religions already have that base covered, the Catholics even let you buy your loved ones out of the torment.

Dumb people are epidemic. You can't save them from themselves. I see simple items like handbags being sold for thousands of dollars just because they are designer bags. No one thinks this is strange. Then you get some person paying $75 for a message from a deceased granny and then people cry foul. We live in a very interesting world.

What a strange and strained parallel. I'm sure you can discern the differences between the two situations?

Yes I know she is dead. Thanks for telling everyone here. They probably didn't know.

There is nothing strained about it. People can spend their money in any way they choose to. You can't prove mediums are fake. My intuition tells me they are, but scientists want physical evidence, so until they get it they can only watch people wasting their money on psychic services.

So we're going to file you under D for "don't give a crap", then.

The parallel sucks. You're assuming there's no scamming and huckstering going on with the psychics. Just look at their performances. They are vultures preying on lonely bereaved people.

Scientists (and you) can look for irrefutable proof. I'll settle for 99.998% probability that they're frauds or deluded and that they are running a racket to steal money from unsuspecting and gullible people.

You need to hear from Ex-Minister and the many others who've been involved in and seen through these exercises in fraud. "Oh, it's just for entertainment and they should be allowed to spend their money any way they want" doesn't take into account the unbelievably desperate people who fall victim to the voodooo mumbo jumbo con and keep throwing money that they can ill afford into reading after reading after reading.

at least when someone pays $300 for a stupid handbag, they walk away with something that's actually tangible.

There's also the issue of bereaved people who are never able to complete the grieving process and move on with their lives because they're being fooled into believing they're still in contact with their deceased loved one.

Plus I certainly wouldn't want my own family's genuine final memories of me to be trampled over and replaced by false memories of someone who makes contact from the afterlife only to prattle on about refridgerators.

The payout Sally Morgan got from the Daily Mail reminded me of

a) how dumb people are
b) how difficult it is for skeptics to prove mediums are fake

The fact that Sally admits she will always get criticism and is ok with that, yet got a payout from critics, is simply stupifying. I admit though that I am not familiar with her or her shows, I just read the article about her which was mentioned in this forum.
