Since there was none at the time, what has changed?Specific evidence would be needed that the SS man in question had done something bad.

Mr Lipschis is the first person arrested as a result of a series of new investigations launched by the German authorities into some 50 former Auschwitz guards who are still alive.
Worked for Laszlo Csatary.I'm sure they'll find some people that "remember" him, maybe throwing babies in a burning pit at the arrivals section.
I don't think we know the extent of the evidence.I wonder what they'll charge the guy with in charge of cleaning theswimming poolreservoir for the fire brigade should they ever find such a guy still living. My guess is "directly responsible for the killing of 1 million people".
Did everyone working at the camps have papers that IDed them as belonging to an "SS company"?Mr Lipschis' wartime identification papers prove he belonged to an SS company deployed as guards in Auschwitz. He was reportedly granted "ethnic German" status by the Nazis.
but witnesses were reluctant to talk and physical evidence was lacking. So, any witnesses becoming less reluctant or any new physical evidence in this case? I have no doubt though they'll find new "witnesses".
Isn't that their good right and isn't it also the good right of the justice system to present witnesses and physical evidence that such claims are wrong in a fair trial?I can see some Germans having low level jobs like cooking. But just about any guard caught after the war is going to say something like they were only the cook.
I don't want it to happen? I didn't say that. If they have new evidence or witnesses, they can have their trial. If not and this is presumably the case, rather not, I'm skeptical. Unlike some people hanging around a skeptics forum. We'll find out at the trial you don't want to happen.

Do you believe that yourself? "Witnesses" will be produced and he will be convicted. Release is not an option. He's been arrested and an indictment is being prepared. A trial will be held, and based on the evidence presented, new or old, he will either be convicted or released.
Sounds like legal harassment. Hey, we have no new evidence nor witnesses, let's avoid double jeopardy and change the charge. The charge is what has changed.
Make him work as a cook in a homeless shelter! Oh yeah he is 93. let me find a pic. Maybe he is spry to or something. I did not find a picture of him but I did find an article about a famous Jewish boy who supposedly was a mascot of the Nazis saying he was fake because there was no way he could have survived. My god that makes me sick to read that. Here's the link.

Mr Kurzem’s son Mark, now dead, published a book entitled “The Mascot” in 2007 about his father’s alleged experiences. Then six years old, Mr Kurzam was described in a Nazi propaganda film as the “Reich’s youngest Nazi”.
Californian scholars Dr Barry Resnick and Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick last year presented the Claims Conference with a dossier of evidence pointing to inconsistencies in Mr Kurzem’s testimony.
Dr Zuroff flagged up Mr Kurzem’s claim to have survived alone for months in the Latvian woods as cause for suspicion, asking: “How can a five year old kid survive the worst winter in Eastern Europe in decades?"
The guy is 93. They could drop the current charges and he could be convicted for your so called minor crime.

Guilty or not guilty it's likely a life sentence.
So newyorkguy do you think it is right that after almost 70 years of being openly known to have been former Auschwitz guards and never charged with any crime that the Simon Wiesenthal Center can demand that 50 almost 90 or older men be arrested?
