Research investigating the potential of detecting the purported presence of spirit (POS) has been hampered by the necessity of employing a human being to collect the data. To infer the presence of alleged spirit, it is essential to remove the simultaneous presence of an experimenter (POE), thereby eliminating his or her physical energy as well as accompanying conscious intentions and expectations.

So the computer uses light and sound to "invite" two spirits into a dark room, a picture of 30 minutes exposure is performed in the dark room, and then some kind of processing has been done on the picture:

"The CCD camera provided 512 × 512 pixel images of 30-minute exposures (reflecting a combination of possible background light plus instrument dark noise). The images were imported into image processing software, and two-dimensional fast fourier transform (FFT) analyses were performed. Visual examinations of the FFT images were performed; average brightness levels of the FFTs were calculated and subjected to repeated measures analyses of variance."

Can anybody explain what is going on? I know that a Fourier transformation can convert a time sequence to a frequency sequence, but there is no time sequence in a 30 minutes exposure? And what would the average brightness level of the FFT images represent?

If this is supposed to be indicative of the presence of spirits, I would have expected that half of the tests would be made where the computer scares off the spirits: "Stay away - testing without spirits going on"!

And then Schwartz and co should not know if the pictures were taken with or without spirits until after the analysis was done ...

Unless you can give me a good reason to believe that Schwartz has suddenly learned how to use the scientific method I won't bother, thanks. All his previous work has been rubbish, to put it mildly.

I've never been sure whether Schwartz actually did manage to complete his education without grasping some of the basic scientific principles, or whether he chooses to disregard them in order to sell books to the scientifically illiterate. Neither possibility reflects well on him.

I agree on that neither reflects well, but I have too much regard for the associated institutions to think that Schwartz can really think that what he did in the Afterlife Experiments even remotely approximates real science. I can accept that he's not the world's greatest scientist, but his errors in basic protocol and statistics are truly astounding and lead me to conclude that it is conscious fraud.

If he does not think so, then I will revive my old offer of replicating John Edward's feats as described in the Afterlife Experiments so long as they are under the same conditions, both for performance and analysis. It is my insistence on that last bit which scuttled my first offer.
