Promises of millions, a new face and detailed instructions on a double-agent conspiracy in Moscow. Bearing the hallmarks of a Cold War spy thriller, Russia’s counterintelligence agency says it caught a CIA officer trying to flip a Russian operative. [...]

The agency stressed that Christopher had “special technical equipment” in his possession, including an additional wig, multiple pairs of dark sunglasses and a lot of cash in euro – along with a Moscow atlas, a compass, a knife, and an American Bic lighter. [...]

:D

The Russians are less amused:

“At a time when the presidents of our countries have reaffirmed their readiness to broaden our bilateral relations, including special service [cooperation] in the battle with international terrorism, such provocative actions in the spirit of the “Cold War” do not facilitate a strengthening of mutual trust,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

This is horrible., since Russia would never spy on us. Never. I am sure the Russians are horrified. Horrified I tell you.

Seriously, silly of the Russians to waste exposing a known entity just to gain a small bargaining chip in the upcoming summit. Now the Americans will have to pretend to be embarrassed by this "revelation" and pay lip service to the whole thing before getting the Russians to move on to substantive stuff.

so they managed to create all those false flags AJ is telling us about, and non of those got exposed, but they fail to simply get a spy on to their side?
and why is the wolrd press allowed to Report on this? :D

Indeed.

Usually, such things are handled much more quietly. Putin has some reason for making this so public; I wonder what it is?

It's interesting how they're all lining up to visit Putin lately ... first Kerry, then Camoron, now Netanyahoo ... something has changed behind the scenes and it almost seems like the Russians have a couple of people by the proverbial balls with very specific information. I have my theory about what that could be based on when the tone changed. This here seems to be a reminder.

Maybe it is the fact that the situation Syria is spiraling into an absolute nightmare and Putin has to do something about it?

I DID LOLZ WHEN i READ THIS THOUGH: “special technical equipment” in his possession, including an additional wig, multiple pairs of dark sunglasses and a lot of cash in euro – along with a Moscow atlas, a compass, a knife, and an American Bic lighter.

A guy in Vegas could have himself a hell of a time with that "specialized" equipment.

Glad you like Russian humour. I laughed as well.

Anybody surprised that the CIA recommends gmail, btw? :D

The Russians are escalating. Yesterday an FSB spokesperson went on TV and named the alleged CIA station chief in Moscow, claiming that he was warned to stop aggressive recruiting attempts before but didn't stop, so they made Fogle's nabbing public. This outing (and burning) of the station chief is unprecedented in US/Russia relations according to some ex-spies RIA Novosti (who don't name the alleged station chief) interviewed.

RIA Novosti said:
[...] “It’s very situational, and the fact that you and I and the public don’t know what occasioned the takedown of Fogle means we don’t know what the signal [from Russia] was,” Earnest, founding executive director of the International Spy Museum in Washington, told RIA Novosti. “That makes it doubly hard to know the signal of this latest development is. It sort of deepens the mystery.”

Goodman, who spent 24 years as a CIA analyst specializing in Soviet affairs, said the spy spat surprised him given public overtures from both countries in recent weeks indicating they were interested in cooperating on the investigation of last month’s Boston Marathon bombings and bringing an end to the civil war in Syria.

“This past week suggests that something else is going on,” he said.

They forgot to mention that the agent in question was MacGyver! :D

Wait--it was an actual American Bic lighter and not just your run of the mill Bic lighter made in a factory in China? That's definitely special technical equipment right there!
