How it should be. Every now and then doing everything is a necessity, but it seems to be mainly falling to the n00bs and those who don't usually like socializing.
 
The hotel says rates are 'Excluding Taxes & Fees'. Can any locals give me an idea of the total % that adds to the stated price please?

If I'm not mistaken, what you'd have to add is 12% tax on the basic room rate. I don't think there are any other fees charged at the South Point (my email confirmation isn't showing anything else, and I do not recall any additional fees being charged in earlier years, unless you get other services, of course).

Thank you. I'll add the rate to my spreadsheet and see how scary the bottom line is :eek:
 
Last year I stayed 5 nights and the bill was around $350. $70 bucks a night. I think my bar tab was bigger. :eek:

I believe the rate is roughly the same this year.

Yes, the hotel is excellent value, TAM itself looks worth it too. IIRC Vegas food and travel costs are reasonable, I'm just astonished at the price of the flights, more than TAM and a vacation at the hotel added together. You need to bring TAM to Europe again! :)

I just need to prise my credit card from my wallet.... :covereyes
 
QEDCon is a very good replacement. Much more of the feel of TAM, with most people staying in the same hotel or very close. Not as warm as Las Vegas, though. JREF sponsored QEDCon last year, though not this year, as far as I could tell. (But a couple of JREF associated people were speaking.)

ETA: I keep hearing the end of comments about why there won't be a another TAM London; I might track down the whole story one day.

I haven't spoken to anyone at length about it, but from what I've pieced together, my understanding is that the event made money, but not enough to make it worth all the work that went into it.

I could understand not coming back if it made a loss, but isn't it good to reach out around the globe and spread the message that woo isn't good? Or even just to meet and energise members elsewhere? I realise that the USA probably needs to hear the message more than the UK as we have a higher percentage of normal people over here, so maybe the USA needs more TAMs than us.

Heck I didn't even realise that the USA had normal people with intelligent and enlightened attitudes until I came to JREF ;) It's the nutters and murderers from there who seem to grab the world headlines.

I was finally nagged into going to TAM today so you can all hit me in person for that last comment - if you can find me :D Won't add myself to the roll call yet as it will take a few days to get my money out and TAM may be sold out by then :(

Thank you kindly for the info AdMan. I have enough £ to go so I wouldn't want to divert any money from people who really need financial help to attend. I was just trying to decide whether I should spend that much dosh on a 'frivolous' trip. I decided yesterday that I want to go to TAM some time, so why not this year? :) My £ will take about a week to get out of cold storage so I hope there are still places left!

A pal told me today that Andrew Carnegie said "to die rich is to die in disgrace". Whether it was him who coined the phrase or not, it seems like I'm not going to die in disgrace :D
 
I'm thinking of coming along again this year. I won't be buying a badge because I'm spending all my money going to SDCC this time, but I have two weeks in LA before that to kill so I'm considering travelling across and joining in with any off-site festivities.
