Merged Heaven is Real... Newsweek 10-15-12

I did watch the end of the video. They took his candy?

Did that have to do with the scar/stitches?

Did I totally misunderstand the video?

Now I do feel like Chicken Little saying this but, "Huh?"

P.S. Am I totally overdoing the spacing thing?

Among other things.
Ohhhhhhhhhh, he said they took his "kidney" not his "candy."

Big oopsie!

Probably then best to disregard any of my posts that have to do with that.

Actually, I'm begging you to disregard any of my posts that have to do with that.

And now, I'm going to desperately try to forget how much I misunderstood that video.

But first, my son needs my help with his math homework.

Actually wish I could go back and reformat a lot of my longer posts!
Anyway, thank you ...look at my reason for editing :)

Doctor was well loved by patients and staff. Probably hoped it was something he ate maybe or was just really scared and wanted to get to the hospital as soon as he could.
That all assumes, of course, that he really existed.
Really, Carlitos, really? Even after all we've been through?!

How...odd...that you do not realize that a "near death experience" (where the person does not in fact stay dead) is not an example of what the experience of death would be like...
Are you aware of the neurological research into the uniformity of NDEs? Fascinating reading.

And they are so uniform because....

And they are so uniform because....
We all related. Our evolved brain wiring is so similar that we can make predictions based on chemically induced or mechanical induced changes. Opiates work fairly typically in most people. We can even reproduce NDE type events using the God Helmet.

I've a question for you. Why do NDE's include cultural aspects. Christians often see Christ or angels with wings. Muslims see Mohammad, Hindus see Ganesh. What's up with that? Is it possible that our rationalizing brain incorporates cultural imagery into the event?

I disagree. Strongly. Let's say 1 million dying people told you they have been visited by dead loved ones. And they were in their right minds otherwise. What is more likely?

1) What they are describing to you really did happen exactly like they insist it happened.

2) Some other brain wiring (a.k.a. I am not open to the possibility) excuse.

Given the highlighted bit, your question is dishonest.

BTW: There are other experiments to induce OBE. These experiments exist because of our understanding of how the brain makes sense of the world. It was scientific research that answered the question and not mysticism or speculation. There's simply no mystery to it anymore.

A.) False dichotomy (nice tactic). B.) #2. Easily #2. To begin with it's parsimonious. Alien implants or the fact we are living in the matrix would be a much, much better explanation than anything supernatural.

(a.k.a. I am not open to the possibility) excuse.
This isn't a valid argument. It's a rhetorical device intended to persuade through ridicule. It's a fallacy. FWIW: I'm open to evidence and parsimonious conclusions.

The "I'm not open to the possibility" mindset has been very evident to me on other threads in this forum and no, that was not stated directly . The "I'm 100% confident" mindset BEFORE even examining a case, I am also way too familiar with. And that in fact, HAS been stated, and proudly proclaimed by some on this forum.

Bottom line, if you go in certain, nothing will ever persuade you differently. EVERYTHING, can always be explained away by coincidence, or memory fail, or brain wiring etc...if you are not open to the possibility of something more.

For example, I have hard copy evidence my deceased Nana visited me while I was sleeping but some have said it can be attributed to just a coincidence. Can it? Sure. A one in a billion coincidence maybe. But to me , it is way more probable ( 'cause I have an open mind) that it is something more.

Much more.

And lots more examples, so when do repeatedly unusual things happening become something to consider that could be more than a coincidence.

Never, right?

I disagree.

Strongly.

Even if true it's entirely irrelevant to the discussion. Even if true it would still be a fallacy.

Perhaps you don't know that I was a Mormon missionary. When I came to this forum a decade ago I was a Cartesian dualist, deist and right-wing conservative. I passionately argued for my positions. My ability to be persuaded is demonstrable. Since coming to the JREF I now support the rights of gays and lesbians, support the legalization of marijuana and prostitution. And of course I believed in the supernatural (I was a Nostradamus fan) but am now an atheist. I can change back anytime. I just need evidence.

There are 7 billion people in this world and trillions of events happening every moment. If many one-in-a-billion coincidences didn't happen daily, we would live in a very, very strange world. See Innumeracy.

Much more.

First off, a natural explanation will always be more parsimonious than a supernatural explanation. Alien probes, solipsism, idealism, matrix, brain in a vat, are all preferable alternatives. But there is something far more parsimonious that has explanatory power and makes predictions so that we can falsify the hypothesis. It's what the brain typically does in those situations.

I disagree.

Strongly.
Rhetorical device. I can assure you that as a skeptic this means absolutely nothing to me. I rely on logically valid argument backed up with evidence. Do you have any of that?
