Atheism Plus/Free Thought Blogs (FTB)

I think it'd be interesting to have some of the bigwigs (such as they are) of A+ over here, but they have no interest in posting someplace where they actually have to defend their views, and also someplace where they don't control the moderation. I give qwints and Apo full marks for coming over and carrying their banner, but I would like to see Setar or Ceepolk here on a (comparatively) neutral site.

Really, guys, come on over. I was just kidding about editing your posts to generate AutoModAction PMs.

It will never happen j. You've seen what happens when anyone challenges any of their claims. What I really can't get my head around is how Apos and qwints can not see how outrageous their behavior has been. Of course given I was perma-banned-their term-for posts made here, I suppose they wouldn't dare agree with us even about some of their more outrageous actions like the banning of Hamilton.

Aye...the weirdness at A+ is flowing thick last night and today.

First we have the gulaging of jimmygun for objecting to his post being hidden in a trigger warning. He appears to be out of touch with the current A+ culture and the Aplussers engaged in full frontal douchbaggery to let him know.

There's also this weird post by Kaissaine in that thread concerning death threats.

Hi!

My name is Kassiane and I get up to 12 death threats a week! It's kinda triggering to see my lived experience used as a hypothetical thought experiment.

Did you think before you asked this question?

Excuse me, up to 12 death threats a week ? How on Earth do you manage that ? Reading her blog confirms that she hates almost everybody but a death threat a day would entitle someone to their own personal cop.

Of course supervictim chemgeek chimes in with her usual meeeeee toooooo.

Thread

Then theirs this weirdness by poster EllieMurasaki...

I'm part of the A+ movement. I'm not part of the atheist movement. I am fine with letting the atheist movement be the ignorant straight white cisdudes, as long as it's clear that they're not a representative sample of atheists.

Hey Submore...here's an example of that bigotry you were railing against a few days ago and just to hammer it home there's this by the Entwife.

IMO & IME especially some of those (white hetero able-bodied middle or upper class cismen) atheists who have never believed, can turn that aspect of their personalities into some kind of "identity badge" of "I am (and have always been) smarter than all those stupid religious people" and become nauseatingly arrogant, their arrogance further propelled by their unawareness of their own privilege.

hate those white ablebodied cid dudebros...hate 'em, being all privilegey and stuff how dare they have opinions of their own.

Of course the Entwife follows up with even more stupid in the very same post...

But also the fierce joy of being more awake every day and among others who also have awoken and are also struggling towards greater awareness.

Ooooo more awake :) So is arrogance over having an opinion a good thing or a bad thing? Damn, it's so confusing.

These posts on a thread where some guy complains that the posters on A+ and FtB are "a little too moderate for my passions"

Just making it all up as they go along, what an embarrassment to atheism.

Ouch. The reaction to that thread is just so utterly wrong.

Trigger warnings, really? Just for using a hypothetical scenario involving death threats? These must be the most sheltered, fragile people victims ever.

I've had people threaten to kill me - turning that experience into an academic thought experiment? Comparing it to acne?

No. Not cool. Don't do that.

So, no academic thought experiments allowed (and no, the OP wasn't comparing death threats to acne. He was listing things what might be triggering to someone) The OP's hypothetical was actually quite good and would have been, in any more open community, a great discussion.

Indeed. They insert multiple "trigger" warnings but if a genuine and civil poster objects to being told to "eff off" as they pile in with the insults, they're "tone policing".

The hypocrisy of that place stinks.

You can't practice victimhood without anger, and that anger needs a direction. People walk into that forum not realizing that they already have bullseyes on them.

Wow.

This thread shows everything what is wrong with A+.

i expect Jimmygun to get banned any minutes now.

Bah. I know it's a bad idea to let my morbid curiosity get the better of me and follow the links over there.

Skimming that thread got my blood pressure several nothces up. I think it's the phrase "link basket" that does it. What a passive-aggressive, condescending, unproductive bludgeoning tool that is, all wrapped up as a gift.

"Link basket". Shudder.

I think you are all losing track of the real issue here. Me :D .

I noticed that I have finally been added to the list of banned users:

Tsukasa Buddha - repeated trolling, being here dishonestly

Which is weird, because I was pretty sure it was being rude to Setar that got me banned. And I checked the "honest" link in the link basket and there is nothing against whining in another forum. Indeed, we know there is a secret forum wherein they do just that.

Interestingly I am starting to see the atheism+ mod-style being used by sympathetic mods on other forums (non-ftb/atheism+/skepchick).

The Internet Infidels (IIDB turned FRDB) was one the original stomping grounds of some of the FtB/atheism+ activists and there still some sympathy in the moderation for their cause and behavior.

You won't see it here, I assure you. Any JREF mod who tried the nonsense those people do would have their mod card pulled forthwith. Bullying tactics are a blatant breach of the JREF Moderator Agreement (and yes, there is such a thing, and every mod agrees to it).

Well, it could have been your username. I recall a member or mod, saying, in reply to you, words to the effect of "eh? what's with that username anyway?"

Even if they banned Scrut?

The difference is that the secret forum where they whine is on the A+ forum so it's okay or something.

Is the JREF Moderator Agreement available to regular JREF members?

And you can also find it via the drop down Help menu at the top right of the page, on the JREF banner (assuming you have javascript turned on); select Moderating Team, and there is a link from there to the Moderator Agreement.

Thanks!

The team list needs to be updated. Beer-swilling jhunter1163 is not there.

And you do an amiable job. I once cast aspersions at a moderator because I was upset with that moderator. Rather than have a back and forth debate. other moderators addressed with this particular paroblem and my concerns and the poster in question never said word in his or her defense.

At the end of the day I determined I was the one who was a fault and the action taken appropriate I apologized to the moderator. The mods here really deserve our appreciation. They are humans and sometimes don't take the best of action but they can be worked with.
