Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

 Well done, Bostonians, for staying calm, and well done, Boston PD for capturing him alive.
And well done, internet sleuths, for spurring the FBI to release photos and video of the suspects (even if it was 24 hours after they should have done so).

Well done as well, for ignoring the FBI's unreasonable demand that people should rely "on these images, and no others," and for poring over fuzzy photos in search of better images, which actually enabled people who knew the suspects to identify them.

Good job quickly publicizing those clearer images far and wide. Truly a job well done.

The captured terrorist was even a Muslim; but who wants to bet that Glenn Beck and his friends and fans at The Blaze will insist something "doesn't add up"?

It's the new conspiracy anthem. "Something doesn't add up."

As I was driving home today, I heard on the local radio station the "news" about the Boston PD cornering someone in a boat and that it might be the bomber they were looking for... Then the newsperson said, "Now we don't have any confirmation it's the bomber, but we think it might be."

No confirmation, but they'll speculate wildly anyway.

Bastards  I changed the station and cursed the sloppy state our media is in these days. They suck.

I think it'll be a twofer for the Glenn Beck's of the world: they get to blame Muslims AND spin conspiracy theories. Gah...

Remember sometime yesterday when the rumor mill came up with a couple of names for the suspects that turned out to be wrong? The names were Mike Mulugeta and Sunil Tripathi. Where did that come from anyway? The reports say it was heard on a police scanner. Sunil Tripathi is a real person who is missing. I don't know if there is someone named Mike Mulugeta, but I feel sorry for him if there is.

Anyway, here's a story about Sunil Tripathi's family. Maybe the extra attention will help them find him:

Good for him. Somebody, besides the comedians, needs to give those clowns a high-profile dressing down. I have never been more disgusted with the cable "news" industry than I am now. A pox on them

Btw, do you have a link on the potshot?

IIRC it was quite subtle--something like "in this era of instant information, it's easy to jump to conclusions."

Maybe dudalb is thinking of something else, but I don't recall anything more than that.

That's hilarious.

Every single one of your "internet sleuths" was still searching feverishly for Sunil Tripathi and the completely nonexistent "Mike Mulugeta" when NBC, the major television news network, released the actual names of the suspects which no internet sleuth had even suggested once.

Thanks to your "internet sleuths", multiple "help find Sunil Tripathi" websites and Facebook pages were taken down by their owners due to the flood of awful and undeserved comments they were receiving after the "internet sleuths" identified him as a terrorist.

Every single one, huh? I guess you have that "critical thinking" down cold. Kudos.

The internet sleuths didn't come up with their names. They did come up with clearer pictures, which led to people who knew their names recognizing them and calling the authorities.

On NPR this afternoon, the mechanic who was fixing #2's car said exactly that. He didn't recognize #2 from the fuzzy FBI photos, but when he saw one of the clearer images kicked up by the internet sleuths, he recognized him right away, and called the FBI.

I'm sure he wasn't the only one.

This was posted earlier by someone else and is a better article about that particular stuff-up:

After the FBI had already identified them. Most helpful and timely.

IIRC, that clear image was sent to the FBI by the photographer. The internet picked it up after the fact.

The fun part is, the name "Sunil Tripathi" can't be found in any recordings of the police band chatter last night - not even once. The Boston police never uttered the name over the radio. The claim was a hoax.

Another article by Salon:

Sunil Tripathi is still missing. He did not bomb the Boston Marathon. Reddit and everyone else who ran with the theory that he did effectively did to Tripathi what the Post did to Salah Eddin Barhoum. Only they did it while Tripathi’s family wonders if he’s even still alive. The truth was revealed before the false accusation spread too far, but the damage is done. At some point last night, after the page was filled with abuse and accusations, the Facebook group “Help Us Find Sunil Tripathi” was deleted by his family.

The FBI didn't identify them. Someone who recognized them from the pictures identified them. My hypothesis is that it was someone who saw clear pictures. Your hypothesis may be that it was someone who saw fuzzy pictures. We'll see which hypothesis proves to have the higher truth value.

And now the self-declared online sleuths are slapping themselves on the back for helping to crack the case
