Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

Has been given in the other thread, speculating on foreign or domestic. Seems a bit of both to me. They're in the US legally, motive doesn't seem to be religious, political or ideological (at least so far), but they are of foreign origin.

Agree so farr. It may even hold up. Very sad.

I'm wondering if...

Thing2 fled, ditched the SUV, made the most amazing Bond escape, ran a few blocks and took a resident or family hostage where he waits...praying that the manhunt doesn't knock on the door.

As in... a very terrified 19 year old, in way, way over his head.

Seems weird that there should be a huge shootout in which Thing 1 is shot, and apparently blown up, and that Thing 2 should be unscathed from that. So maybe he is injured? Anybody heard anything about that possibility?
It is very weird. It led me to suspect that they just confused them with some armed robbers. It is still not clear to me whether naked guy was in the same car. Or maybe he was not in the car but they are still looking for him? More will become clear later.

That doesn't mean his motivation is religious. Chechens are predominantly Muslim, but the violence there is mostly motivated by nationalism, not religion.

Actually most nationalists rebels and terrorists have either died, fled the country or joined the current government. The far majority of current Chechen (and dagestani) terrorists are extremist Muslims, many who want to establish a Caliphate across the whole North Caucasus.

Chechnya was a misery factory for a long time, ruthlessly suppressed in ways we can't really understand in our comfy lives - breeding a few generations of especially virulent and ruthless Chechen asymmetric forces to fight the Russian Oppressor.

I am surprised at this vector as you would expect Moscow would be a more likely target, but I am less surprised that people from that environment turned capable of doing something like this. Brutal places make for brutal people. In this case though I think it likely there's some columbine-esque social alienation playing into it as well...

or care? They are terrorists, and have been terrorists for a while.
Does that mean your opinion is correct? Motive kind of does matter when people like you are trying to blame it on islam or whatever.

I'm not sure if I got the chain of events quite right, but from what I understand: Carlos Arredondo (Cowboy Hat Hero) springs into action like Superman and saves the life of Jeff Bauman (the victim who lost both legs). Bauman wakes up from anesthesia and the first thing he does is describe the suspect. The description helps the authorities focus their attention and leads to identifying the suspects from all the hundreds of people in the photos.

I know it's overly trite and simplistic, but a good deed helps defeat evil -- and in this case, not symbolically but quite directly.
