The teenage boy authorities once investigated as possibly being connected to the Boston Marathon bombing told ABC News today he was shocked to see his face pop up on television and all over social media.

Salah Barhoun, 17, said he went to the police yesterday to clear his name after he found himself tagged in pictures online. He had just gone to watch the race, he said, but soon after the explosions, he was singled out by internet sleuths as looking suspicious.

False reports on Wednesday that a suspect had been arrested in the Boston attacks damaged the credibility of the news outlets that carried the reports and created waves of public confusion and frustration.

It appeared to be a low point for the media. But now that low point has been surpassed.

The New York Post on Thursday has printed on its cover an image of two men standing together at the marathon under the headline "BAG MEN: Feds seek these two pictured at Boston Marathon." The image shows two young men, one with a duffle bag and one wearing a backpack, talking to one another.

The problem – a very big problem, for any media organization that would aspire to meet the most basic standard of accuracy – is that neither man appears to be a suspect in this attack.

There also seems to have been a lot of this going on:

In the three days since the bombing, the suspects may have left the Boston area and could well have left the country, said a law enforcement official who spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

From the FBI website:

After a very detailed analysis of photo, video, and other evidence, we are releasing photos of the two suspects. They are identified as Suspect 1 and Suspect 2. They appear to be associated.

Suspect 1 is wearing a black hat

Suspect 2 is wearing a white hat.

Suspect 2 set down a back pack at the site of the second explosion just in front of the Forum Restaurant.

For clarity, these images should be the only ones—the only ones—that the public should view to assist us. Other photos should not be deemed credible and unnecessarily divert the public’s attention in the wrong direction and create undue work for vital law enforcement resources.

I think the main clue is that they have video (not released) of Suspect 2/White Hat dropping off his backpack at the point of the second explosion.

ETA: Magenta was faster despite quoting an actual source. :D

I don't think it is appropriate for people to start fingering Sunil Tripathi. If law enforcement eventually connects him to this fine, but it would be really sick if people started a witch hunt.

But since I don't think that will stop anyone I will just point out one thing to those speculating on him being Iranian or other Middle Eastern extraction: To my knowledge, Tripathi is an Indian surname.

Well if 9-11 was a pretext for the Iraq war it won't take a smoking gun against Iran either. I just hope it's not the case.

I had the FBI link open already. ;)

Just curious about whether people trust "official sources"? The deficiencies of the media in reporting unfolding events seem fairly obvious (not just a problem with the US media).
 
Tripathy's nose bridge is long but low. White hat has a prominent protruding bridge - like a classic Roman Nose.

I fear this could backfire on the FBI, and lead them to wasting a lot of time chasing down false leads. Not to mention, I think there will be a huge number of innocent people falsely accused and caught up in the dragnet. Oh, and did I mention anything about the potential consequences of inadvertantly fostering racial profiling among the general populace?

I hope that I'm wrong.
