Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

They say they don't want to release the pictures of the two suspects they're looking for to the public because they're concerned it would impede the investigation. I hope that means they're a lot closer to identifying and catching them than they're letting on.

I'd just like to remind them of how the Unabomber case was finally solved. . . . .

4chan detective work!

da bomb!

I'm not sure, but I think maybe you're assuming that they're trying to deduce who are suspects based only on these images (and racial prejudice or whatever) while they (or at least Skeptic Ginger) are in fact trying to figure out who law enforcement authorities consider to be suspects based on what they've said publicly. We know for sure they have two people on camera they consider to be suspects. I think SG is merely making the case that these images might tell us which person or persons in the images might be the suspects law enforcement are after.

There are post-explosion photos already posted (though I've lost track on whether is was this thread or another) showing that the metal barrier was bent around the mailbox, suggesting that the explosion was on the other side of the barrier and pushed it towards the road.

I can't imagine the explosion being powerful enough to do that. I suspect it was bent by the people pulling away the fences.

ETA: I was thinking that was the location of the first bomb. After seeing the pic in post 882, I think it could have been the crowd that bent the barrier.

I can after seeing the shredded legs images. But I think if that bag was the bomb, there are ways to explain the fence, including the crowd moving it after the fact. Those pictures are after some time, the injured people are mostly gone considering the reports are more people were injured in the second bomb than the first.

I wondered about that, but it's fairly hard to imagine rescuers bending the barrier either. It seemed more feasible to me that the barrier was bent by victims being thrown against it.

The news is now describing but not showing the two guys that are together in a lot of the IMGUR images, guy with black backpack, jacket, and white cap and guy in blue with the duffle bag over his shoulder.

They've been identified and came forward already this morning. Apparently it's a high school track athlete and his coach.

Post a link to the news story that describes the guy in blue with the shoulder bag.

New York Post has posted one of the imgur pics:

It's the Post, so take that for what it's worth.

Then this Boston Globe story says that the suspects are seen apart from each other - not together...

Authorities have clear video images of two separate suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings carrying black bags at each explosion site and are planning to release the images today in an appeal for the public’s help in identifying the men, according to an official briefed on the case.

The official said that the two suspects were seen separately on videotape — one at each of the two bombing sites, which are located about a block apart.

The official, who spoke this morning on the condition of anonymity, said the best video has come from surveillance cameras on the same side of Boylston Street as the explosions. The official said the widely reported Lord and Taylor surveillance camera, and snapshots from individual cellphone camera users, have not provided the clearest images.

It was unclear why authorities did not publicize images of the unidentified suspects yesterday. President Obama is visiting Boston today, and the timing of a law enforcement briefing remained unclear.
