Proposal for state religion in North Carolina

"The Constitution of the United States does not grant the federal government and does not grant the federal courts the power to determine what is or is not constitutional; therefore, by virtue of the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the power to determine constitutionality and the proper interpretation and proper application of the Constitution is reserved to the states and to the people," the bill states.

"Each state in the union is sovereign and may independently determine how that state may make laws respecting an establishment of religion," it states.
By this logic, they can override any federal law and make their own determintion of the constitutionality of each law. What will be next, repealing universal sufferage, re-instating slavery?

Is it Islam? Is that the religion a bunch of North Carolina Republicans want to make official? I bet it's Islam.

You have got to be kidding. Islam in North Carolina? You think they could figure out which way is Mecca five times a day? It's Scientology.

I just want to know when we can start hauling these treasonous, fascist, anti-American subversives out into alleys and shooting them.

"Dukes of Heaven"?

"Oh, God! She's wearing St. Daisy Dukes!"

Etc.

Maybe that's what St. Teresa was wearing under her habit when God paid her a, um, "visit".

ETA: it must have been Satan that paid her a visit. God wouldn't have stuck around long enough for her to achieve her famous "ecstasy".

This is being proposed by conservatives. Is anyone really surprised by this?

Looks like grandstanding to keep the folks back home happy.

Is there any chance of this even getting to a vote?

150 years ago, they would have been correct - States were sovereign. Mr Lincoln unconstitutionally but very successfully settled the issue once and for all. Since then, there is no reasonable question that States are inferior to the judgement of the federal judiciary. And, of course the establishment clause (now) applies to the States.

As for North Carolina - it fares no better or worse than any state with a significant Republican majority in both sides of the legislature and the chief executive would. As recently as 5 years ago I would have labeled this grandstanding without a prayer (see what I did there?) of making it to the floor. Now, I am less confident.

As for the snide asides at the general intelligence of the actual residents of NC - bite me. I've been to virtually all of your states*, and you have at least an equal percentage of mouth breathers.:)

*especially the one from the resident of the great state of missery.

Um, I wasn't suggesting anything about the intelligence of North Carolinians. I was born in Mississippi, lived in Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia. I'm not one to do the Southern = stupid stereotype. My jest hinged in the unlikeliness of Islam being the popular choice of religion there.

Anyway the most awful state is clearly New Jersey.

Tell me you are surprised that the small govt party in North Carolina wants a states religion?

No more surprised then when I realized the party that calls itself pro-life supports the death penalty.
