its worse than religious. its disgusting!

The worst I know about from someone religious was when my son was with one of his therapy providers at a McDonalds. An apparently Mennonite woman (or fundamentalist sect with similar dress) proclaimed, after asking what was wrong with him and being told, that my son was an abomination in the eyes of the Lord.

I only regret that I was not there. My son understands much more language than he's able to express.

I stopped posting there soon after I was informed that I'm essentially oppressing my autistic 9 year-old by having him in therapy. You know, the only treatment of autism that has any demonstrated clinical efficacy. Apparently I'm ableist.

I didn't get banned, though.

Ah, I think I've found the problem

It looks like the Aplussers see autism and learning difficulties as something to be celebrated, not treated in any way.

Why do I deduce this you ask ?

First is yesterday's thread and blog linkage by Kassaine in the taupe ribbon thing.

Another is the way hamilton was treated WRT to her project concerning movies ( Kassaine, again )

Ceepolk was on about thinking that, in her mid 40s that she might just be autistic

Then there's the chemgeek who, after doing an undergraduate degree in chemistry was on about having to save up enough money to pay for a learning disability diagnosis so her university will make special accommodations for her when she does her PhD.

Someone has a sig line saying something that implies that neurotypicals are somehow inferior because they don't feel empathy the way non-NTs do/can.

It could be that your attempts to mitigate the effects of a learning disability on your son's social life are being seen as an attempt to erase your son's identity.

I'm not sure how much being banned after 12 posts counts as "tolerating".

But I have to say that my favourite part of that thread is, again, ceepolk. Brother says that he's civil, ceepolk shouts at him saying that she's not, he says she's starting a fight, and SubMor says that you don't get to poke someone with a stick and then claim that they're starting a fight when they yell at you. So...saying that you don't swear is starting a fight.

And, as a point of interest, she uses the term "longshoreman". Isn't that a little sexist as a term? Is she saying women can't be dockers?

That was an interesting exchange. I was hoping they'd have a go and do the whole what constitutes sin and morality thing but alas, they went all victim and swung the banhammer.

Umm yea, why she didn't say "swear like a radical feminist" instead of using a gendered stereotype, we'll never know.

Cristo has been saved. He has seen the error of his ways and has repented in public. Praise be unto the Illumi-Notty of the A+ Inner Sanctum. For they have turned a sinner away from the dark and into the light of A-Plussiness!

Hallowed be their name.

Is it my imagination or did I hear that thread utter, "Thank you, sir! May I have another?"

That reads more like a swansong.

Poor Christo. First he gets slapped around and a one week ban, then he comes back and posts a heartfelt apology. The chemgeek attacked one line out of that apology because it had to do with an A+ regular.

Christo goes back, deleted that apology and replaces it with a challenge, no doubt feeling like he's being unfairly attacked then the ceepolk swings the hammer yet again due to his deletion of that heartfelt apology.

It looks like one week later, Christo has said his goodbyes and the A+ mod team can rack up another kill.

I think your conclusion is correct. Maybe I need to try to drag that topic up, Kassaine was involved and I think I basically stated that until my son is 18 and can decide on his own what he wants his state of therapy is wholly my and my wife's decision.

Taupe ribbon?

Taupe ribbon?

It's a response to Autism Awareness Month.

TONE IT DOWN TAUPE

for those lacking autism.

About the ribbon:

It is taupe (or tan. Or beige. A non offensive, non obtrusive color) to symbolize the toned-down sensory and emotional experiences of those lacking autism.

The eyes represent the incessant demands for eye contact from people lacking autism.

The large size represents the size of the epidemic. 49 in 50 people lack autism! Help us find a cause! Help us develop more effective therapies! Help us integrate those lacking autism into a functional society with autistic people!

This campaign, while sounding a bit silly, is also a bit serious. Tone it down. Tone down the fear rhetoric. Tone down the alarmism. It is not necessary to light anything blue to show support and love for an autistic individual-that can be accomplished by, well, actually supporting autistic people. This is an opportunity to actually raise awareness and educate people: when they ask what that giant ribbon is for, we can explain why we are toning it down taupe, that fear rhetoric hurts real people, and that what autistic people want is not to be fixed, not to be prevented, but to be given the supports we need to be part of society. It's a way to make people think.

Something aplussers seem to want to dismiss it the responsibility a parent has to and for a child ( aside, for the lulz, Setar once tried to make an argument that parents were in a position of privilege over their children ) and the want to see that child "fit in" and not be bullied is a very valid concern.

I have a kid with mild ADHD, or so they say. He's 7 now and things have gotten way better but 6 months ago his school was heavily suggesting psychiatric intervention and alluding to expulsion should things remain the same WRT his behaviour.

He was doing the bullying yet when things don't go his way or he doesn't get what he wants, he's very quick to play the victim. Even to the point of making things up.

My next door neighbours had to drug their kid after he was kicked out of a few schools due to behaviour issues and exhausting all other avenues. The stress they went through with this was off the scale.

Just why aplussers would downplay or erase the concerns of parents who only what their children to have a happy life eludes me except for speculation that the aplussers want everything to be all about them all the time, like my kid does.

Aplussers want victims. Like themselves. The more the merrier.

I'll be honest. I find that taupe ribbon bit offensive. I'm sure it is a great joke for all those people that self-diagnose as Aspies...which is now formally folded into autism...mostly apparently as an excuse as to why they've been socially awkward. (anecdotal observation, so don't know if that's the actual trend)

How does that help with anything like awareness for all of us with family that are not on the "very high functioning" end of the scale? I feel fortunate that we're close to that part of the spectrum, at least our son seeks interaction and expressed affection and can do some things for himself (like go potty as an example).

We already have to fight professional woo-wielders hawking BS treatments within our population...that many parents fall for, and I completely understand why they do. (anti-vac (which puts our entire species at risk), chelation (which is potentially lethal), clay mineral baths, GF-CF, colloidal silver, yeast-prevention, hyperbaric oxygen chambers...etc.)

Now we have to fight the SJ crowd, too? (Luckily they seem a much smaller group especially the A+ types)

I share this speculation.

Not just victims though, the right kind of victims. Not people who have been victimized and gotten over it but people who have been victimized and it's had a permanent effect on their lives and people who enjoy pointing out ways that other people who are victimized even if it involves making things up to support that victimhood.

Take yesterday's thread on drug dogs and front yards. According to ceepolk it's racist because, presumably PoC don't live in houses with yards.

Rich people don't need grow ops.

I don't know what all this "fear rhetoric" over autism is. Other than Adam Lanza, I got nothing.

I can see how you'd find that offensive. me ? I just find it stupid however autism isn't in my/our life. I'm thankful that my son's ADHD is what it is and if I'm oppressing him by having to tell him to calm down, pay attention, don't make things up, quit playing the victim, you were the aggressor in that situation, which are all things he knows rationally to be true then those making that accusation best rethink their definition of the word oppression.

Yea, the woo. I've read some pretty freaky things. None of it anywhere reputable and I hope your attempts to educate those parents who are desperate enough to fall for this kind of predatory marketing prove fruitful.

Interesting. Is it okay to use therapy to teach a non high functioning male autistic person that no means no? Or is that erasing them by forcing them to fit arbitrary social expectations?

(Yeah, that's a question related to "intersectionality." Whoop dee doo. So, what's the answer?)

Respectfully,
Myriad

Somewhere, an Aplusser's head just exploded.

I have but it consistently blows-up. It rapidly becomes a faith system and any even mild word to the contrary results in anger and rage.

The heartbreaking part is found in the kids that have died by hypocalcemia due to an overdose of EDTA. (EDTA or other chelating agents only being approved for a true heavy metal poisoning emergency.)

I did ask that kind of question in that thread and they did. My son goes for armpits and, consequently, sometimes he touches boobs. We have mostly extinguished that behavior but sometimes we have to reinforce. I did explode, too, in response because I thought it was a skeptical forum where we would discuss issues related to social justice and such. (That and my previous references to it are to the best of my recollection, of course.)
