This morning, I finally realized why the Mormon faith will never be one I could accept. It's not the fact that the prophet was a know con man. The Christian narrative of redemption could explain that. The Apostle for which I am named was once a tack collector, and Jesus redeemed him.
Really? I happen to have a small collection of push-pins. Do ya think that'd count towards my redemption? I suppose it makes some sense as Jesus started collecting nails before he died.

...The "hot drinks" origin was explained by Pup earlier. In the early 1800's hot drinks were considered to be the source of all sorts of medical conditions, so JS wasn't being original, he was simply going along with what was a current fad. ...

Yes, I remember the post hoc explanations and cultural context, and most interesting that information was!

The fact remains Smith claimed his strictures were the word of god and were accepted as such by the LDS.

You keep trying to use logic with those who have foresworn thinking.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also known as LDS /Mormon, is a Christian denomination, but is neither Protestant nor Catholic... it is the restored Church of Jesus Christ, with eternal doctrines and teachings dating back to the days of Adam, and to our pre mortal existence.

The LDS dates back to 1930 when a previously know "crystal dowser" con man published a fictional book plagiarized from the Bible, Khoran and and other writings.

Later the formula was copied by another con man going by the cute name of L. Ron Hubbard.

There is always a market for new fiction.

1930 or 1830?

On Wednesday (Aug. 29), the LDS church posted a statement on its website saying that “the church does not prohibit the use of caffeine” and that the faith’s health-code reference to “hot drinks” ‘’does not go beyond (tea and coffee).”

It always amuses me how the inerrant word of a deity can then be subsequently interpreted to ensure that current practice is convenient.

It's as if the LDS leadership was admitting that God was created for man and not the other way around.

Those who live by the push-pin, die by the push-pin.

If memory serves, the Opus Dei indulge in self-flagellation as a form of worship.

Which means beating themselves with flails.
