I guess we can assume that the poster either did not use his own advice and look up the details of a mercury switch or he misconstrued what it said.

IIRC a mercury switch is 'sparkless' only because its enclosed and thus the volume in the switch that is not taken up with mercury simply has no contact with the atmosphere surrounding the enclosed switch.

Now, mercury in a vaccuum.......... I could be wrong but would that not simply vapourize?

2nd, liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen cannot exist in the vacuum of space. Thanks to the permanently open hole of the combustion chamber, they immediately become gases that expand to fill the infinity of space (Boyle's law). So, even if a spark were possible, the gases would escape the chamber without ever igniting.

Yes. Since the mercury and electrical contacts are sealed in a glass or plastic container, they are reasonably safe in a flammable atmosphere, but I have had thermostats with mercury switches, and if you operate them with the cover off, there is a visible momentary spark when they make or break contact.

The 'vacuum' would become filled with mercury vapour, to some temperature-dependent pressure. The remaining mercury would remain as a liquid (within appropriate temperature range).

Mercury itself is toxic, but it's method of poisoning you comes from breathing its vapour.
