So, what name will the new Pope take?

I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this. If there is, feel free to merge this in.

In media speculation about upcoming pope names, I noticed they were all talking about name choices in terms of imitating recent Popes. If he were to be called Benedict XVII, that would signal continuity with the Pope Emeritus. John XXIV would be the sign of a reformer. All that sort of thing.

It got me to thinking when the last time was that a Pope picked a wholly new name. Of course, John Paul I was an original, never before used name, but he just combined two other Pope names, so he doesn't really count.

I got out my list of Pope names until I got to a I, or to a Pope with no number at all, because he was both the first and the last Pope to use the name. The answer came in AD 913, with the coronation of Pope Lando.

Now that would be an awesome papal name. Lando II.

It takes over from my former first choice, which would be Hilarius II.

Let them try to figure out who the other ten were.
 
I'm sure they'll name the new pope the one that everyone is expecting. The one from those predictions. I'm forgetting the name.

If you are thinking of the prophecies of Malachi, it would be a very gutsy sort of call for the new pontiff, who would have to name himself Peter II.

If you gave me odds of 10 - 1 or better, I'd take that on a bet, but for the most part, I would say it is very unlikely. You might find someone who wants to emphasize that the Pope is traditionally the heir of Peter.

Admittedly, it's somewhat more likely than Lando II.

I don't think there has ever been a Pope Luke, Mark, or Matthew. That would make the ancient connections without being quite so presumptuous, or quite so apocalyptic, as Peter II. Pope Luke would be very Christian, but still fit with the Star Wars theme.


There is much speculation that a Latin American will be given the nod this time. Maybe Pope Jesus? I guess not very likely.

As far as an actual prediction.......something that signals a change. That would mean either John XXIV, or something that hasn't been used in the last two centuries.

ETA: There were three popes named Lucius, which I'm guessing is the Latin form of Luke. I didn't notice any Marcus or Matthias, or anything that looked like a variation thereof.

The Bugle podcast suggested that a successor to the Pope from 461 to 468 was well overdue. Therefore, the new Pope should be Pope Hilarius II.
 
The last time a pope was elected the leading contender was Giuseppe Cardinal Siccola. However,he was eliminated when someone pointed out that it would be inappropriate for the Pontiff to be referred to as "Pope Siccola".

Srsly, I doubt they will choose Peter III because of the 'Malachy' prophecies. No point in stirring up the nutbars more than they need to.

If I had to guess, I would go with Innocent, with a small side bet on Matthias.
