"SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the release of a new edition of its English-language scriptures.
The new edition has been released in digital formats and will be available in printed formats in August. The updates include revisions to study aids, new photos, updated maps and adjustments to chapter and section headings."

"SALT LAKE CITY — Studying and understanding the scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be a little easier now that church officials have completed an eight-year project focused on updating and adjusting the footnotes, chapter headings and study aids associated with the scriptures... The revisions were released late Thursday and have been integrated with the LDS versions of the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price that can be accessed through lds.org. Church officials said updates will be sent to those who have already downloaded online and mobile versions of the LDS scriptures."

Do you actually think that a report that a new edition of a text has been released is an endorsement of the accuracy and inspired infallibility of the text?

Do you actually think that two "news" outlets owned and run by "Deseret Digital Media" are neutral sources?

Well, there is this lot, though not all outsiders call them Saints.
Before I even hovered over your link, I was thinking Southampton FC. :D

Pants is men's underwear here, women's underwear is knickers or undies as dafydd said. But to be confusing, pants can also be used for women's knickers if they are old, saggy or generally unfashionable. We (all) need to be careful on an international forum that we are understanding the terminology used.

My statement to Cat Tale, is one designed to make her take an honest look, at what she calls herself.
If she is a saint, then I see no problem with her calling herself one. If she is not a saint, is that just another in a long line of misinformation, or what

A special thanks to those who have come to my defense. Yes, I was responding to halleyscomet's post

There are a few articulate, thoughtful, former Mormons in the thread who have been giving all of us a wealth of insight into Mormon beliefs...

To which I replied, "I am a very active Latter-day Saint." Therefore, it seems obvious to me, and apparently others as well, that I was referring to the fact that I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I wonder if one problem is that a lot of non-members are not aware of the fact that LDS don't tend to refer to themselves as Mormon -- that's a term that we've been given by outsiders due to our belief in the Book of Mormon. Members of the LDS Church tend to refer to themselves as "Latter-day Saints" or LDS.

Why did you post this? What does it prove?

As a New England colonial history buff, I'm already very familiar with the usage of "saint" meaning "member of [a certain] congregation" because the early Puritan settlers did that too. It doesn't mean or imply "good person," but it does mean and imply "member of the elect."

Which I still have no problem with, any more than I object to Jews calling themselves "God's chosen people" or whatever. You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't, regardless.

Respectfully,
Myriad

I have seen Mormons Missionaries in arguments over these topics, and they make a much better showing then Janadale is......

"Lord, I know we are your Chosen People, but could'nt you choose somebody else for a Change?"

Exceptional play/film.

That brings up a curious little piece of Mormon trivia. The LDS have borrowed the term "Gentiles" from the Jews and occasionally use it to refer to non-Mormons. More than one Jew, upon interacting with the LDS for the first time, are startled to discover that suddenly they are Gentiles.*

My understanding is that gentile is for non-Mormons and non-Jews. Mormons have long claimed a close relationship with the Jewish religion (as has most right wing Christians). See Orson Hyde’s 1841 Mission to the Holy Land (the official Mormon site).

Which does seem to say that you know that what Joe wrote has nothing to do with the hieroglyphs but that establishing the church was more important than the actual facts.

Note the hilited, Joe didn't write what was true but Truth and Truth doesn't have to be connected to reality in any way.

Known con artists are the best source for this Truth.

You're telling me god had to use a con man, and a lie, in order to get people to join his church?!?!

And those of you who are members of the church, see nothing incongruent, about that? Seriously?

Please, please, please, I am asking a serious question.

Why can't god just be honest, not lie, stop war and poverty, communicate directly, appear when called, heal all sickness out of a sense of love, and get his written words straight?

Wouldn't that bring people to the club?!?!

You would think so. The Church has a history of deception. See LDS Leaders and "Lying for the Lord". I know you are not directing this to me but I'd like to respond anyway. This is a touchy subject for many Mormons. The deception is not controversial. Why does an omnipotent and omniscient deity need deception? It's a good question. Sorry I can't provide anymore info. Hopefully someone else can respond more substantively.

Interesting. This Wiki is closer to the way I had it explained to me when I was a child (although I never heard it used as a slur), but certainly you hear the "Jew and Gentile" as well, so I withdraw my earlier statement. :)

RandFan, do you know anything about that first vision scenario? Apparently, there are a multitude of different versions. Why?

Why isn't the first recorded version of it, the one that is regularly published?

Will have to take a look at the link you provided. Thank you.

Not RandFan, but here is a good site for exploring the First Vision.

The more I read and study, the more I am astounded at the amount of deception.

Janadele and those of you who are members of this church. Why do you disavow the actual history of what happened?

Yeah I know. That really took the wind out of my sails when I heard that. All I can do is use a Golf metaphor, over the years they improved their lie (pun intended).

The newer stories were more dramatic and were more clear about god's plan for restoration. It fit the emerging narrative better. The less ambiguity the better.
