Hopefully Chavez's death shakes the cultists and sycophants out of their stupor and paves the way for democratic and free market reforms.

I was going to write something similar, but two issues stopped me. First is that brain dead in this thread signifies actual end of higher brain function, rendering him incapable of making descisions, speech, communication and so forth, rather than just making really stupid descisions.

Secondly, it's hard to say his policies were that stupid. They were certainly bad for the country and a large majority of his countrymen, but helping them was never their goal in the first place. The goal was to solidify power in their own grasp and never let it go. Destroying the private sector makes perfect sense then. Not fixing problems such as housing, water, electricity and so forth? Perfectly logical as well, since no one but the government has the capacity to fix them in the first place. You fix one problem out of a hundred or so, and make a big deal about it. People will then compete to be loyal enough to get your favor and won't care as much if it could all be done a whole lot better.

It's basically the technique Orwell described in 1984. It's very bad for the country and it's people, you could say it's evil, but idiotic? Not really.

I'm no fan of his and think he's a pretty bog-standard populist with buffoonish rhetoric. But he's not comparable to Stalin or Kim Il-sung.

True, he's not, but he is (or was) using the same principles to maintain power. That he never got as bad as the worst of the worst in no way alters that.

I will give the guy credit for one thing... he put his money where his mouth was. There's been more then a few Canadians who have spoke out against American health care and then when they have got sick (cancer) decided to skip the lines at go to the states for treatment.

Ol' Hugo, I'm sure, would have been a lot better of he had gone to the best doctors in the states then in Cuba....... but he went to Cuba.
