Merged Bigfoot follies

The people saying it's impossible are speaking out of emotion. If someone has a general idea of how much forest there is, then they probably know that it's not impossible for such creatures to exist.

They seem to be everywhere and nowhere. (I've heard that before)

How can so many people see them, talk to them, feed them pancakes, and yet...

Congratulations, you discovered that it's impossible to prove that bigfoot doesn't exist, because there is always another tree to look behind. And you can apply that to every imaginary being you want... Mermaids? Well, there is always another tree reef to look behind. Pretty convenient isn't it?

But, they're not in the forest, are they? They're all over the bloody place. You can't throw a pig in most places without hitting a Sasquatch, it seems. If people think Bigfoot is impossible, it's because Footery has made it so. Maybe I'm just being unscientific, cranky and emotional, but it's gotten to the point where I'd believe someone's yarn about space aliens, ghosts or mermaids, before I'd believe a Bigfoot cock and bull story. At least those wacko things have a good excuse for not landing on a slab. What's Bigfoot's excuse? "Ninja forest hobo"? Those ninjas are swanning around trash cans, parking lots, kitchens, poop barns and backyards. Bah. Humbug.

Exactly. Succintly put.

Do you know how much of that forest has been cut over? Second and even third growth over old growth?

Where did footie hide during the clear cuts?

Do you imagine even the old growth forest of the PNW and British Columbia is unexplored? No hunters, hikers, trappers, x-country skiers, anglers, campers, geologists, forestry workers . . ? You know forestry occurs even in old growth forests, right?

Did you know that in the great wilderness of Alaska musk oxen were virtually exterminated and had to be reintroduced?

Where did footie hide during that extermination?

ETA: I understand that musk oxen are tundra dwellers; I was going for the wilderness angle, or rather what Bigfoot enthusiasts imagine wilderness to be versus the reality.

I don't know if you've noticed, but they don't actually cut all of the North American tree cover down at the same time.

Of all the arguments you've used, this is probably the weakest.

No, but in the areas where they have logged, they often did it quite quickly and efficiently for the time. And as they logged, they harvested the game like deer and bear etc. Not bigfoot though. Odd that.

And speaking of bear. As they pursued Manifest Destiny and moved west, the settlers nearly wiped out the brown bear population, leaving only remnant populations in Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and Washington. A large omnivore approximately the size of Bigfoot. Exterminated, nearly. Not one single bigfoot specimen though. Odd.

The weakest argument here is for that of Bigfoot.

And it's not just the tree cover, it's people, lot's of them moving throught the alleged habitat of the alleged cryptid. Moving like a wave from Atlantic to the Pacific, harvesting specimens of all the large game, all the large game animals as they moved. Thousands and thousands, feeding these settlers, clothing them. Providing fur rugs and fur hats and fur blankets; taxidermed full body mounts. But not one Bigfoot body. Not one.

The state flag of California features the Golden Bear, the California Grizzly, of which none are left, the last killed in 1922.

What footers are saying is that there was no interest in sasquatch fur at a time when fur was really valuable to people. Every sort of fur was harvested and sold. The huge fur trade boom in North America should have collided with an ample sasquatch population.

People had no problem shooting their fellow man, either. So "looking like a human" really shouldn't have been a factor. They had no problem discriminating against "inferior" humans, and killing them or using them.

Yet somehow, bigfoot is completely absent from the arena.

There are still 80,000 licensed trappers in Canada...

One of them, Ragnar Jonsson, lived and trapped around Neultin Lake in Nunavut/Manitoba most of his adult life. He told many a tale including his love for flapjacks made with the blood of caribou or moose. He lived off the land and I spent the night in one of his tin teepees once. You would have thought that he might have mentioned a creature like bigfoot in his meanderings, but no, not even.

Dude, its not "impossible" for such a creature to exist. What is impossible is for it to exist, and not be discovered a very long time ago in this country. You dont have to agree, but that is the cold hard truth. I'll say it. "It is impossible for there to be a real live bigfoot in the USA."

You know the reasons why. No amount of text, or arguing will create such an animal.

Well we kind of did do that during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, actually. Our state of Pennsylvania is today about 75% forested and for all we know was maybe 90% or more forested at the dawn of European settlement. In 1920, however, it was only about 25% forested. So we're talking about a massive reversal of vegetation cover from forest to non-forest, most of which was in agriculture, coal mines, and on steeper rocky slopes, regenerating forest. Most of that forest wasn't just cut, it was cut and settled.

This was also a period of history in which elk, cougars, wolves, and - almost - white-tailed deer - were extirpated from the state.

yes, compared with todays slow encroachment of the suburbs, this was an enormously rapid destruction of both habitat and wildlife, almost unregulated, with powerful tools of destruction and killing. Cut down/kill anything and everything that could be used/eaten or made into a trophy.
Michigan was a virtual clearcut.
No bigfoots were harvested/found.

Bigfoot believers love the legends and myths, and love to show aerial views of trees, but actually seem to have an ahistoric view of the landscape/society/exploitation of the country.
