Civil Unions coming to Illinois?

And it is their job to propose a legal framework. Of course it needs to be a framework that they can all get behind as well.

Ask them. I'd be surprised if they haven't already crafted proposed/modeled legislation of that effect.

And why should I be so preferential that one groups relationships gain legal recognition and the others do not?

I'm certainly not.

Let me express myself in another.

Heterosexual marriage is pair bonding. It's 1-1 attachment. Homosexual marriage is also pair bonding (and involves people that probably shouldn't be getting married heterosexually anyhow).

The polyamorous dynamic is fundamentally different mathematically. So the arguments for homosexual marriage can't be carried over trivially. For instanc,e if 50% of the population engages in polyamorous attachments, then the insitution of pair bonding IS damaged, as people who prefer that have trouble finding mates (I'm not attached a moral evaluation here, just stating a fact). Indeed, the dynamic is different in a lot of respect on a psychological level as well. A small group can be dominated by a charismatic individual, leading to other members of the group being neglected. It also can mean that when there is a problem in the relationship, instead of focusing on that problem and fixing it, a person can instead just shift to other relationships and is therefore inattentive of the problem. Granted, it is possible for such things to happen in a pair bond, but it is my contention they are less likely and less damaging. There are other potential abuses that could make things which we consider bad now (trophy wives) even worse (multiple trophy wives). One can't trivially say these concerns have no substance, though I admit it is possible they'd come to naught.

Since marriage is something of social value, one shouldn't change the fundamental dynamic without careful thought and consideration. I would therefore advocate that before any law allowing multiple marriages ever came to pass, careful research must be done to evaluate the short term and long term consequences of such a change. It may end up being a positive thing, or it may not, but we should not blithely assume one or the either. (I'll grant my personal feeling on the matter is that it would not be good, but I admit that my reasoning would need to be put to the test to either validate or invalidate it).

The legal changes are not identical. That muslim wants the law to be much different from the poly people I know. Restricting polygamy to polygyny is a MAJOR issue.

Sure there are differences, but they want an institution that would be similar, depending on how much they want to roll back things like womens rights. The point is though that if they polyamorous people get their way, the religious polygynous will use the same law changes to get what they want.

Will they ever do it?
The child in the corner asks me.
He's alone as always.
Reptition is the lesson for today.

The stories they tell me, those faceless instigators.
My dreams.
I won't lose them.
Not to those people.

I'm so happy today.
Can you believe it.
Propositions are being proclaimed but I've found god underneath my pillow.
A melancholy creature.
Why?

Good for Illinois.
And I am still angry about what happened with Prop 8 here in California. And some of that anger is aimed at the Gay Marraige supporters who made the fatal mistake of not taking prop 8 seriously until it was too late.

And I am now taking book on how long until monty 1 shows up on this thread to post his
"Americans Are Stupid and Evil" crapola, since he seems to be sysmatically going down the threads in this section and doing so.

Breaking Update!

Today the Illinois Senate voted 34-21 to legalize gay marriage. It is expected to easily pass the House, and the Governor has said he'd sign it.

So it looks like in the next few days Illinois will become the latest state to legalize gay marriage. :wave1

Cool. Now, if I can only meet the right guy, then Chicago for a wedding and honeymoon would be nice. I like theater, so NYC has been an option, but living in Indianapolis, Chicago is a bit closer.

Hooray! This might be an interesting thing to study, because it is not like we've had a political change.

Totally awesome.

Long ago I co-officiated in a marriage of two guys, totally unofficial of course, but they absolutely were together to the end. Unfortunately that was not long off for one of them who had bad KS at that point in time.

I'd bet that the votes in favor of gay marriage this past election was enough evidence to the state representatives that public opinion on the issue has truly tipped in favor of same sex marriage, and it's an inevitability.

Yes, there seems to be real momentum on the issue, now, and little political risk for those supporting marriage equality.

Hooray.

And this disproves one misgiving I have had about going to the intermediate step of civil unions. I was afraid that they'd get stuck in the separate but equal approach to the rights of gay people. I'm glad I was wrong in this case, and I will now support such things more enthusiastically in the future.

I was afraid of that too, glad to see I was wrong.

And btw while the vote was largely along party lines the Illinois GOP Chairman supports gay marriage. The social conservatives howled, but baby steps.

Yeah, but proposition 8 seemed to have galvanized the gay civil rights movement. Sometimes a good kick in the nuts can be beneficial.

The only bad thing about this is that all the state and local officials in the Land of Lincoln will be figuring out how they can get some graft out of this.....

Agreed, but still, you NEVER underestimate a opponent and take something for granted. That is politics 101.
