Bigfoot DNA

So, if Sykes were to find something that hasn't been found before, do you expect that it would simply come back as "unknown", or would you expect that it would be more closely categorised than that ("unknown primate", for instance)?

Mike

He should have no problem getting it to unknown primate. But that does bring up another interesting point. one which has lead to alot of bigfooters ending up with Egg on their face.

Several years ago Sykes lab was asked to test a sample from a supposed yeti. early on they were not getting good results, contamination may have been an issue, back then it may have been primers, etc. So when asked about it Sykes accurately reported that he could not ID the sample, as of yet.

That was reported world wide as British DNA Guru has DNA from an animal that he cannot ID. And of course that lead to all the believers yipping and yelling that science had finally proven them right! A few months after his original response, his lab figured out the issues, and rightly reported that the samples had come from an asian bear.

However for several years you would still see the original report cited by believers as stone cold hard evidence that Bigfoot exists. It was even spouted here in this forum about a year ago.
It took one email, to get confirmation that indeed it was actually not unknown, but was a bear.

I suspect Brian learned his lesson there. he will not release anything until he has a complete set of results, and he is done with his analysis!

Yes. Sykes has what it takes! The stage has been set for a possible discovery now. Nothing like this has ever been done before. It could shed some much needed light once and for all on what the creature people call Bigfoot is.

So when this deal fades like farts through silk, then what? Do you think your fellow footers will develop a more firmly entrenched anti-science stance? How about you?

Prior to this thread my DNA (testing) knowledge consisted of little more than a few of the buzz words. And it's not grown a whole lot since (lack of interest), but I'm thinking I've been making some assumptions about it that aren't necessarily true.

To generalize, can't DNA testing get all the way down to the individual level of identification no matter the species? And I understand DNA has to be matched against a known quantity to determine exact match, but what about a general match? Isn't the human genome (for example) pretty much exactly the same throughout humankind except for the few genes (relative to the whole) that define the racial makeup and uniqueness of any one individual? That is, say you have two sets of DNA data, one from a human, one from a Capybara (and you don't initially know that), does the fact one is human and one is Capybara become clear/obvious (sooner than later) in the testing, or is there more that has to be done to differentiate them?

For that matter, is primate the closest classification we can get if DNA is of primate origin? Was OJ Simpson's DNA determined to be 'primate in origin narrowed down to that primate sitting right there, judge'? I've heard things like 'we share 98% of our genes with apes' blah blah blah, but I can't say I truly know what that means. How many genes do we share with Elephants? Or Sea Urchins? Do we have the genome mapped out for every single species of animal that exists on earth? And if not, genus level?

Bryan Sykes has received quite a few promising samples. I know this because I know the Olympic Project & TBRC have submitted samples and Meldrum screened the samples before sending them off. Sykes is guaranteed to have legit hair samples.

Hey I like Dr. Meldrum. I'm not a fan of his gigantopithecus agenda though.

He seems to be a nice enough guy, but he hasn't brought anything more to the puzzle than anyone else, in fact IMHO he has brought much confusion and is responsible for most of the junk science that plagues the BF community.

Tim :)

I'm sure the samples are legit, it's just the species that are in question.

I wouldn't bet on the footie.

More entrenched anti-science? Is that possible?

Well, lemme think . . . yes that's possible.

Recently I've seen footers talking about yogis, Padre Pio, levitation and suchlike as it may relate to the paranormal characteristics of ole bigfoot. So I'm thinking when this latest hoax (Rick Dyer Footie in a Freezer Redux) plays out, when Melba Ketchup (Dr.) craps out, and when Sykes' dna report comes out, well, footers are going to lash out at the big stupid ugly dumb science weenies for not validating their pet passion.

You're absolutely right on all accounts Resume. I have spent some time recently on BFF and there is nothing in this world that will move some of those folks off of their belief in Bigfoot. Nothing at all.

Welcome to the JREF. I hope you find it more . . . well more anything than that other place.

Has the TBRC or OP ever produced anything that you could say "Now that's a squatch" ? I don't think so, they might send legitimate samples of something, but even they don't know for certain what the samples are or they wouldn't be having them tested.

Jodie,

The TBRC knows what the samples are NOT, and that's BF. Reading Brian Brown's pinned thread over @ BFF leaves no doubt he is making it up as he goes. Brian, Kathy & company are well aware there is no BF.

I came to the same conclusion. when i started out I was willing to test peoples samples for free, thinking they really believed they had a BF, and when the results came back "nope, sorry its a horse, or yak, or whatever", they would say OK, thanks!

Instead the game was clearly this: The best they could hope for was it was too degraded, which they would immediately twist into - see it's unknown DNA, it has to be BF!
If it came back known animal, then they would launch into incompetance, and part of the giant coverup conspiracy, or I pulled the old switcheroo, and after they left I would pull out their original sample and claim it for myself, as the new BF discoverer!

They know what their sample isbefore they submit it by and large, what they were after was the aroma of scientific validity permeating their specific sample. Once it had picked up the odor of legitimacy, because a scientist tested it, then they could ignore the result and climb the BF ladder of shame and fame, based on the fact that their sample had been scientifically tested.

BTW, this was Southern yahoos game plan!

So I instituted a cost per sample, paying only for student lab tech time, reagents and supplies and sequencing. The money is donated to a nonprofit organization that funds student research scholarships, and scientific inquiry. I make no money, their donation is tax deductable, it covers the cost of their samples being run, and students get the benefit of experience, and a few bucks for gas!

once i instituted that policy, all of a sudden the endless trail of people with for sure bigfoot samples dried right up!

Now; the few people I have interested in me testing their samples - well they are true believers. and they know I am a skeptic! they trust I will do the testing without any hidden agenda or pre concieved outcomes, and will shoot straight with them. They are willing and mentally and emotionally capable of understanding and accepting that!

Thats a long way of saying the vast majority of these people know, in their subconcious, that there is no BF. But they have pinned their self worth and self image on being one of the special few with special knowledge. and nothing will get in the way of them maintaining that specialness!
I do give credit to the true believers out there, but by my definition, backed up with personal contacts, they are actually a very small minority of those who claim to be believers!

calwatebear hit the nail on the head.

The legitimate seekers of truth will want their sample analyzed and gladly pay the fee because they are confident that they have something of value/importance.

Bipto claims he sent off their sample to a DNA lab and paid the money for analysis upfront. Then, once the lab found out it was purported to be squatch blood - they refused to test it without any analysis done and also refused to refund the money paid.

That is spokesperson Bipto's story. There is more than one.
However, none of them will name the lab.

Well then they sent the hair too, and that result should have been back long ago. I hadn't heard anyone say that the results are back yet.
