O ya Mike you are certainly right on that, one thing that makes the overall big difference in this BF thing is, there ain't no monkey, and no amount of wishful thinking or hollow claims on their part is going to change that, we have science, they have a myth.

I agree completely. This is why I think it's a waste of time to address the PGF.

You're right that my statements there do not influence the believers, or as they like to call themselves, the "knowers". There are plenty of other visitors there, however, who are just trying to wrap their heads around the possibility of bigfoot. Anecdotally, I have heard from several of them who indicated that the kind of perspective I've provided was very helpful. Of course, we know how unreliable anecdotes can be . . .

Knowers are almost exclusively those who claim eyewitness and that is why they "know". But there are others who are fully convinced (not on fence) but make no claim to have encountered any. They just feel (with complete conviction) that the evidence presented so far is confirmatory in itself.

Is your success with those two kinds worth mentioning?

They sure helped me back in the day, of course we didn't have the cult like mindset as it is now, but never the less your posts directed me to the proper way of looking at BF.

Feel free to mention it. I agree that there are two kinds of "knowers" - I think Mulder has been both. I also agree that neither I nor anyone else working to inject critical thought at the BFF has any chance of budging such people on their bigfoot belief, or at least their claims of bigfoot belief.

Is that a problem? Should I stop showing up for work because some proportion of students in my classes will earn Ds and Fs?

No. But you might think differently about showing up for work if your university were like the BFF. Your students have jumped through many hoops in the quest to qualify to attend and engage you directly. Nothing like that at BFF.

The truth is that many of the people you encounter daily on BFF would never be allowed to attend your university.

Your talking management issues and I have admitted that I was wrong many times here, I tried to tame the place down and got caught up in it, that's why I resigned and
spoke out against the management, it went all to hell after that, my heart was in it but I just didn't understand the full scope of the problem.

Gotcha. Yes, there are plenty of people there with significant . . . deficits. There are also people lying through their teeth. But when you say "Nothing" at the BFF like I might encounter in a typical university student, you're giving the students too much credit and many folks at the BFF too little. I think there are many bright, earnest folks in the mix there, and probably a lot more than that who are lurking for extended periods, much like I did before I made the decision to dive in.

I think of it something like debating young earth creationists. Some of those YEC people are highly intelligent - a lot of them engineers who could out-math me on my best day - but they're highly deluded by their own biases or, in fact, just outright lying. No amount of reason from skeptics is going to budge these people from their positions, but those skeptical viewpoints do make inroads with the crowd of spectators gathering to watch the fireworks. It's not every skeptic's cup of tea to engage such people, but it is mine.

Just to set the record straight...

These two people were convicted believers, not fence-sitters. They wouldn't have said something like Goodall said... "Maybe they don't exist". No, they would have said "They do exist!" Yes?

The Shrike was the one that was responsible for them turning full circle so that they now say "Bigfoot doesn't exist". IOW, it wasn't a bunch of things not adding up - it was Shrike. Yes?
 
I'm sure Shrike's posts had something to do with it but I can't prove it. But please continue being an ass.
 
I was going to ask RRS and Jodie if they knew of others who firmly believed and then stopped. But that is probably too much ass.

Shrike and a few others gave me the tools I needed to understand how things in Science work, that and what I learned in the background as a mod is what changed me, I was only on the forum for about two years it didn't take long, I came to the BFF as just a nature naive street guy, I grew up in the city, went to school during the 70's busing era, I learned how to fight and stay alive, everything else was a joke in school, I ended up in the Army at Ft Carson Co, that's where my real interest in BF began beside the PGF as a kid, I figured with all that wilderness BF could have been real, it's what the Skeptic's on the forum gave me that made me realize it could not be true, the mod job gave me the insight to the hoaxes and what the real BF was all about.

And as far as being a mod on a forum like that you should give it a try, you might be surprised how challenging it is working with people that have binders on, I am not the peaceful easy guy I had to be, I did that cause I wanted to learn and I took the job seriously, ain't like I could have just busted in with a few of the boys and just took over, this is the internet.

You'll also notice alot of appeals to authority, regardless of if their findings are confirmed. Books by Krantz and Meldrum are treated like the bible.

I would say about 90% of the folks I talked with on the BFF thought BF was real, most of them told me they had seen it, or had friends and family members that did, a few of them had multiple encounters, I had to weed through that stuff all the time, I just went through it again when I returned to the BFF, what ya going to do when folks are nice to ya, just call them outright lairs, I don't care if they think BF is living in their house drinking their beer, I know it don't exist and that's all that matters to me.

When I have to start paying taxes or get my privileges taken away cause BF is somehow declared real and the government wants everyone to pitch in and protect it, then i'll get mad, until then it's up for some good jokes and some good Bigot Fundamentalist Forum hilarity.

No I did believe at first and slowly fell off until I figured it out.

You have two things going on with me, I was a regular member then a mod, I was a member trying to figure it all out, I wanted it to be real cause just like when I was a kid I wanted Sea Monsters to be real, I thought it would be cool if something like BF really lived in the forest, so I joined the forum and went to work finding out what was going on.

Then I was a mod and had to protect the forum and that sometimes meant having to stick up for things I didn't believe in so much, like the MRP, I had to stick up for that but I had my doubts cause nothing was adding up, like I said you have to be a mod in a place like that to understand it ain't so easy, I wanted the place to thrive and stay busy, I like posting a lot and talking, that was my goal and at least that worked ~ lol
