I had an epiphany last night while reading A+. I can actually see a need for an anti-harassment policy, strictly enforced, at conventions.

There's a petition circulating.
. now I didn't sign it because I'm not planning on attending any of these rape fests in the near future however if you are planning on going, you might what to add your voice.

Suppose, just suppose, you want to make a joke. You think long and hard about how this joke may be perceived at the conference. You think it's kind of cute, kind of clever and you may have spent hours writing it for someone in particular.

You tell your joke without offending the recipient

HOWEVER !

A special snowflake hears it and applies higher level social justice reasoning thinking logic whatever to it and twists it into something so odious, something so offensive that you're out on your ass because that special snowflake is waving the anti-harassment policy around and demanding disciplinary action.

Ha ha, you say, Stout, you funny guy, nobody's that stoopid.

May I present to you that very scenario happening only yesterday over on A+

Hmmm well it can't be that bad. I'm going follow this link and see where it takes me.

Someone suggested recently that Atheism Plus rose up to fill the vacuum Hitchens left after his passing. You think there's any truth to that?

I'm not sure how that makes any sense. What would cause someone to suppose that?

IDK I'd never heard it before. Maybe some lefties were not happy that Hitchens was an independent thinker, and felt gleeful that a true, articulate, critical thinker was out of the way so that an intensely ideological splinter of atheism could take hold without the risk of biting criticism from that old white man.

Also, it's the thing that alpha personalities naturally do: rush in to fill power voids.

Is there a link to an accurate timeline of A+? Was there a "shot heard 'round the world?" It would be interesting to see how it correlates with Hitchen's passing.

googling...

I think that while that's entirely groundless and nonsensical, it may be a better dig at Hitch than any of his detractors managed to come up with during his lifetime.

Your problem, pragmasaurus, is that you are attempting to distinguish between 'people find this offensive' and 'this is offensive'. No such distinction exists.

I'm trying to figure out if they're an omnivore or vegan community.

Ergo: if someone finds A+ offensive then A+ is offensive, right?

no, anyone who finds A+ offensive must be a privileged trolling ******* ******** misogynist racist ablist NT etc etc, and A+ has already established that such a person does not have valid opinions.

I'm sure it's in that required reading list somewhere.

Good point. At least their name "Atheism +" doesn't claim to be in favor of "free thought" like Free Thought Blogs where they ban people for expressing an opinion (TF00T was banned before his bad behavior).

But isn't the offense in the offense taken?

Big brother would be proud. Yes. :)

I'm not necessarily defending the idea that the offended part get to stigmatize the offender just because the are offended. However, there does seem to be a certain amount of social construction in the perception of offense, because, at its simplest, if no-one take offense at an action, the action is ipso facto not offensive.

ETA:My phone is slow to load smilies, so I missed the "context" of the text I quoted. I, in essence, just gave a serious response to a comment that wasn't menat to be taken seriously.

Okay, I understand you better. Yes and... well, no, not quite.

  • Yes. If one is offended by something then that thing can be said to be offensive.
  • No. If one is unreasonably offended then that is the fault of the person that is offended.
If I were to be offended by bunny rabbits then that would make the rabbits offensive to me but it would also make me irrational.

Isn't exactly what happened at TAM 2012 with Hall's t-shirt and the song (not sure who sang it), and where Amy got so offended that she had to leave early?
