According to this article, President Obama has rejected a plea in a petition signed by 34,000 people to build a moon-sized, planet-destroying, "Death Star." The idea was that such a project would put lots of people to work for a long time. While 34,000 amounts to a minuscule fraction of the American electorate, I'm assuming that such a large number indicates these folks intended their petition to be taken seriously.

Are there that many followers of the Force out there? Or was this really a put on? Of course, I'm aware there are other petitions circulating that, while not as absurd as this one, are really dumb, but I'm still astounded.

I loved the White House's response to it. Showed a great sense of humour, all whilst promoting science and technology. :)

But how else are we going to keep the local systems in line?

You don't get this Internet thing, do you?

You got to hand it to the White House, though. The title of the response article on the petition site:

This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For

Sir, the possibility of successfully petitioning the White House for a Death Star is approximately 3,720 to 1!

Petition to White House:

If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than can possibly imagine.

Are you sure I thought it was 6.023 times 10 to the 23rd.

BTW I liked the administrations response also. And was not enough of a Star Wars fan to recognize the reference.
