Help Wanted: Astronauts Needed for Mars Colony (Wired)

Mars One, a nonprofit organization based in the Netherlands, intends to establish a human settlement on Mars in 2023.

They need astronauts.

Anyone on planet Earth can apply if they meet the basic requirements. But obviously, the job isn’t for just anyone.

Today, Mars One released its application criteria. Among other virtues, astronaut candidates must have “a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust. They must be resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful.” And be at least 18 years old (no maximum age has been set).

. . .

At least eight years of training will be provided before launch, including simulated missions, practice in a restricted mobility environment, and lessons in electronics, equipment repair, basic and critical medical care. In 2016, the company plans to begin rocketing supplies to Mars, including spare parts, two rovers, and living units that can be assembled into a base once humans arrive.

But it’s a one-way trip for all involved: Once on Mars, there’s no coming back.

I think I'll pass. Of course they wouldn't choose me anyway.
I imagine they'll have plenty of volunteers though.

I don't think I'd want to be on the first mission!!! Maybe the 3rd or 4th... just to give me the confidence that they know what they are doing.

That time frame seems a bit optimistic though eh?

It's probably a bit optimistic. However it seemed wildly optimistic when JFK set the goal of putting a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s, and that was achieved.

They say they will raise funds by selling publicity. I wonder what will happen when the public get bored with it? Also what contamination will happen on Mars.

Why go there, sit on a planet with plenty of resources, and not make any plans on coming back ? Seems silly.

Wow! This is the chance of a lifetime! Now I have the opportunity to spend the rest of my life on a barren, lifeless, boring planet, expose myself to unknown health hazards without even the option of a modern hospital, socialize with just the same few strangers for all my years, sit on my ass all day long watching movies and reading books and so on!

Amazing! Where do I sign ?

Is there a powered lander capable of delivering substantial payloads such as the proposed modules? If not you're looking at a parachute landing and, afaics, these modules will be scattered (relatively) far and wide.

Looks like more pie-in-the sky wishful thinking. Or a conscious scam.

Reading a little further, they plan to use an upgraded version of the SpaceX Dragon capsule, which has a parachute-to-water return system for terrestrial use. How this might work in the Martian atmosphere with a hard landing is not made clear.

I`d be quite happy to sponsor some people to go to Mars...

Sylvia Browne ?

I was thinking the other way round. What happens if ten years after these people land life is found? Did these people bring it or was it there all the time?

Depends on what life it is. If it is Escherichia coli then they probably brought it. If it is something like Tyrannosaurus Rex only with hundrends of limbs, then it probably was there all the time.

My money's on a conscious scam.

If it also exists on Earth then they brought it with them. If it doesn't, then maybe it was native to Mars. I don't think it would be that hard to tell the difference. Something that evolved on Mars would be adapted to a very different environment than something that evolved here. If it is at all similar to anything on Earth at a DNA level then it almost certainly came from Earth.

I believe you just described another version of the "Big Brother" TV shows currently on the air in several countries.

And that's all there is to this project. MarsOne will not send anyone to Mars by 2023 - there will be no money nor technology for that by then. With all the publicity they're getting with their outlandish promises they might be able to raise enough money for a reality-TV show where some people are being "martians" in a desert setting - for a season or two.

Do you really want that **** to get the honor of going down as the first human in history to set foot on an extraterrestrial planet?

As far as the timetable, keep in mind that the US got a man in space mere weeks after Sputnik made us realize there was more to life than fancy cars and rock & roll.

I've always had an interest in Mars. If you live on Mars youd have to always be indoors. Youd always have to worry about crop failures and earth is too far away for any help to arrive if something happens.

I couldn't be a colonist of Mars myself but I'm excited to see that it may have a human population before I die.

The whole "one way trip" thing dooms this as being batcrap crazy.
And they seem totally ignorant of exactly how much it is going to cost for a manned mission to Mars.......
