I didn't realize people questioned it. I use the pt almost daily when laying out walls at work.
 
The Pythagorean theorem is not true in spaces of non-zero intrinsic curvature.

In Junior High (Grade 8) I had a math (geometry) classroom in which hung a sign reading "Theorem not valid where void, in non-Euclidean space, or in the State of New Jersey".

Same with 'level'.
A level line of several miles, is an arc of a circle.

Of course, so is a short, level line.

So use a chalk line. Of course, at several miles, it's going to sag, no matter how tight you stretch it, unless it's made of infinite tensile strength unobtainium.

That's why we gots lasers!!! Though OSHA standards may require extra safety considerations when working in close proximity to a black hole.

After a couple miles, you might have to conider the the surface of the Earth is a sphere.

We'd be hard-pressed, in construction industry, at least, to make a line more level than that river...yet, it moves right along.

Correct me if I'm wrong; just in head napkin math, but the off-levelness is one part in 10,000.
Where I live, on the Cumberland River, normal river altitude is aprox. 600 feet.
These waters move fast here, yet, drop a mere 6" in a mile.
They reach the Gulf Of Mexico some 1000 miles later.

I find this amusing.
Water is so slippery.
Ethanol, even more so.

True, I only use it for walls up to the length of my tape measure. 3,4,5 ... 6,8,10 etc. if im doing a lot of walls I break out the laser. Ive seen people try to square walls with a framing square...talk about highly inaccurate.

i'm an old builder, once held in high regard.
Plumb, square and level are depressing to me.
The perfection of our sheet rock tends to overwhelm the underlying integrity of our structures.

Especially in residential structures, modern construction methods are crap.
