School shooting: but don't mention guns!

The price of twenty six and seven year olds:

Guns and ammunition manufacturing annual revenue $11,000,000,000
Number of people employed by the firearm manufacturing industry 35,165
Number of weapons and ammunition manufacturers in the U.S. 465
Number of retail gun dealers 50,812
Annual Federal tax dollars collected on firearm sales $123,000,000

Good value folks?

The comparison is silly for a number of reasons, but let's play with it anyways. Your number comes out to around $500 million per person. There are various ways of assigning a monetary value to a life, but for the most part they come out to a lot less than $500 million.

The trouble with a discussion of reducing gun deaths in the context of mass killings and spree killings is that they make up such a tiny fraction of gun related homicides that, even if we eliminated all of them it would not change the homicide rate in the US by much at all.
It would depend whether the measures which reduced one also reduced the other, surely.

Actually if you type in "Machete mass murder" into google tons of stories come up.

Ok, so it shouldn't be too hard to find one analogous to the current incident, then. Go ahead.

I was talking to some friends last night. They agreed amongst themselves that this even would shame many gun supporters into reconsidering their ideas. I told them that, based on what I have read here, it hasn't changed the way they think at all. They were surprised.

I feel persecuted for my hobby over what criminals and the mentally ill do.

This is not a new feeling.

I have no idea why I would feel any shame.

Percent who want to protect gun ownership by region
East 36 %
Midwest 52 %

Americans, please explain why the large difference.

Sorry to sound snarky but what argument do you think you're advancing with your friends' self-righteous indignation?

Wow, just wow. You feel "persecuted"! Maybe you should make a few calls to Newtown and seek some council and a shoulder to cry on over your feelings of persecution.

This thread is so full of self-righteousness, I feel it should spawn its own religion.

Well this is really a shot in the dark, but I'd suspect it reflects the rural background of the population in the midwest. And what of Western states? Larger still?

Really though, I think I need to see the methodology, the actual question that was being asked by the survey to make a more informed guess.

Not to mention the length of the study, the number of respondents, the margin of error, the types of weapons being discussed, etc, etc.

I don't think you should feel shame. You should see what criminals and the mentally ill can get up to with a car! No driver feels shame because of their activities.
