Westboro Baptist Church Protest Protested

I grew up in Newtown. Spent the first 31 years of my life there. I still live about a half hour away (New Milford). It does NOT deserve these evil clowns showing up to picket with their foul, filthy signs.

As I hear it, they're planning on protesting when the President is here. I think they'll be trying to get their damn signs on national TV. That'll be tonight, I think 7:00 PM EST. I think the President will be speaking at a memorial service at Newtown High School, which is not far from where this happened (it's actually in Sandy Hook, which is small enough that nothing is very far from anywhere else in the borough). There will be several memorial services in town, including most of the churches and at least one "park" (Ram's Pasture, for anyone local enough to know town).

I would think a counter-protest would not be out of line. These were children, for pity's sake, around six years old. Their deaths should not be further sullied with this filth.

Maybe the gay communitties coulld start organizing kiss-ins at every WBC ortest. Surround them with kissing, fondling couples, dressed as the weather permits.

Please don't do this tonight. The town is in enough pain without such controversial displays. I have nothing against the gay community (you'll have to trust me on that), but I feel that this is neither the time nor the place.

I think it would be better to just show up in force, squeeze in between them and their targets, and keep squeezing in until they're a mile away, then turn our backs and ignore them. Pretend they're not there at all.

Lefty, while it's a good idea in principle these "people" are so odious I don't think me and Mrs. Alt could muster a pucker....

Indeed but these "people" don't care that all the child victims were either 6 or 7 years old. All they care about is hate.

Havig a kiss-in (of any orientation) at a funeral is in pretty bad taste. Even if it designed to spite the WBC.

Sorry don't know anything about a 24hr rule, the info I posted is all over the net so I thought it was worth posting here.

This might get some peoples blood boiling.

That particular incident is nearly two years old, I'm afraid.

Anonymous is around of course; but they're just as likely to be milking the school shooting for "lulz". The fake LEA Twitter accounts releasing phony "details" about the shooting and investigation, and the phoned-in threat against a church service in Newtown earlier today, strike me as quite-imaginably Anonymouslike.

I seriously doubt that the Secret Service will let these idiots within a mile of the President. And, hopefully, they'll enforce their wishes with Tasers.

Puppy, I have to disagree. Counter-protests are quite effective. Recently, there was a military funeral here in my town, and a group of people got together to organize a counter protest.

The outpouring of support from the community was HUGE! The crowd of people was no less than 5,000 people, and lined the sidewalk on the side of the funeral home for almost 1/2 a mile. Westboro fools never even got out of their vehicles. The parked, saw the enormous croud, including PGR, and decided to leave. We stayed, supported the family by showing our gratitude and support. They came out and thanked us for coming.

So, sometimes, not always, counter protests can be effective.

Was that the one from Sept? I was at that one. I didn't think they even showed up.

Fred Phelps sees dollar signs whenever a ticked-off (justifiably) Marine in uniform punches out one of his cronies at their bizarre military funeral protests.

I understand legal disputes are a significant source of income for those guys.
Too bad. That is an indictment of the current legal system.

I hate every single thing these guys stand for, but as a veteran I have to come to terms with the fact that the freedoms I swore to protect absolutely include the right of WBC to assemble and say whatever they want, no matter how vitriolic or disgusting.
I disagree here. Freedom of speech should have some limitations. As a veteran, you also defended the right that we should have freedom from libel and hate-crimes. I do recognize that this becomes a slippery slope. With freedom of speech come responsibility, a responsibility that is abused by Phelps and his sick ilk.

That's why I love the Patriot Guard Riders. They'll show up at military funerals at the request of the family, and make a barricade with U.S. flags and motorcycles between the funeral service and the WBC nutjobs. Whenever the Phelps-ites start screaming their rubbish and attempt to disrupt the ceremony, the PGR will drown them out with revving their motorcycles.

That is an awesome form of counter-protest if ever I've heard it.
Never heard of them before, but I approve. A good way to disrupt the WBC activities without the confrontation that Phelps craves. I must say that just revving up their motorcycles shows a lot more restraint than I would have, given the circumstances.

Except that they feed on the negative attention. People aren't saying to ignore them out of respect - people are saying ignore them because that's the one thing they can't fight against.

They will not stop if ignored and will continue to hurt people. Cannot ignore that.

Religion does that to people. Not normal trolls. Trolls on a mission

Fred Phelps is the guy this whole thing runs on. When he goes, I can easily see the WBC breaking up and ceasing their vile message. I get the feeling they follow along because they fear the man.
