Nexus 10, Retina iPad key metrics: the Google tablet is thinner, lighter, and boasts a higher pixel density.

Worlds highest pixel density on a 10 inch tablet for $399? Wow.

Nexus 10 announced today:

Nexus 10 is the newest tablet from Google. With the world’s highest resolution tablet display, all new multi-user support, immersive HD content and the best Google apps – Nexus 10 has something for everyone.

Google's Nexus 10 is a remarkable-sounding tablet that challenges the iPad on key hardware metrics.

"What we're seeing is the establishment of the new high end," said Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch.

Google's high-end 32GB Nexus 10 model is priced at $499 ($399 with 16GB). By comparison, Apple's 32GB Wi-Fi iPad is $599.

And the lower-priced Nexus 10 includes impressive iPad-busting hardware specifications, making it harder for Apple to distinguish itself on hardware alone.

"Apple has always demanded a premium for their products and we'll see during the holiday season how much [market share] they're able to hold onto," said Shim, who correctly anticipated the new tablet, telling CNET earlier in the month that Google would hook up with Samsung on a very-high-resolution 10-inch tablet .

I'm just amazed that it has taken so long for the competition to release anything that truly is a competitor to the iPad. This Christmas is the first that the question 'which tablet should I buy?' Is not answered with 'depends which color you like! :-)

It looks like a compelling piece of hardware. We'll see how the long-term game plays out on these zero-margin tablets.

Does it take SD cards and have a interchangeable battery?

That would knock it out of the park in my book.

Can I play PC games on it? That's the only holdup for a tablet for me.

ETA: Not games, PC games, including online stuff.

I still wonder why Microsoft is waiting until after Christmas to release the Surface Pro. It will be the first tablet that is comparable to a PC as far as I'm concerned.

As for the Samsung Google Nexus 10, I read today that they are working with Wal-Mart to absolutely flood Wal-Mart stores with this thing from the middle of November through the holiday season. That's a good move, unlike the Nexus 7 which I only ever seem to see at a Staples....

Well, I might as well let you down easy!

AFAIK there is NO sd card slot, NO replaceable battery, and NO cellphone internet (3G/4G/etc.).

It sounds like you, like me, are going to have to wait for the Microsoft Surface Pro which supposedly comes out within a few weeks after the holidays.

It will have real Windows 8, which means it should be compatible with just about anything that runs on Win XP/7. As long as it meets the specs of course.

So... it's not a smartphone. I've already got one of those on my belt, and I suspect I'd look even goofier holding a 10" tablet up to my ear.

Take as an axiom that lack of SD card slot and replaceable battery isn't much concern to me.

Consider:

a) The great majority of my tablet use would be in locations with good WiFi (at home, in my office)
b) I would like the option to use the tablet, with internet access, from other locations (e.g. when traveling)
c) It is very unlikely I would have the tablet but not the smartphone with me on occasions (b)
d) I already need to purchase wireless data service for my smartphone.
e) My smartphone has facility to serve as mobile WiFi hotspot.

With that in mind, should I really care if the tablet supports only WiFi access to the internet? Won't I be just (nearly) as happy to tether the tablet through my smartphone when I (infrequently) want to use it away from familiar WiFi? Or do I misunderstand something important?

I'm not being argumentative, I'm seeking advice.

No SD slot but you should be able to get a $2 cable, $5 app and hook up to USB drives like the Nexus 7

I don't think you even need the _$2_ $1 cable or the _$5_ free app.

Just get a micro usb flash drive.

Or put one of those 1 inch long 50 cent usb to micro usb adapters on a USB flash drive.

On the off chance it doesn't get recognized as a hard drive, then get the free app.

I may as well step in here and guarantee Microsoft's tablet success by predicting its failure (I did the same for the original iPad and now own an iPad 2 and Nexus 7 - thus proving I am a cretin :D).

Never-the-less, my view is it's too late in the game for Microsoft to make any impression what-so-ever in the tablet world.

Maybe the one that runs Windows 8 will find a market. Then again, how heavy is it and what's the battery life like? Is it less expensive than a MacBook Air? Or one of the better UltraBooks?

Here's a new article/review:

http://www.wired.com/reviews/2012/11/google-nexus-10/

Apple’s iPad, which on paper is outmatched by the Nexus 10 in nearly every way, is still a more compelling product because it has 275,000 iPad-specific apps sitting in Apple’s App Store just waiting to be downloaded, touched, tapped and swiped.

It makes the Nexus 10′s primary mission — jump-starting Android’s 10-inch tablet ecosystem — seem all the more daunting. While there are more than 700,000 apps built for Android, most of them were built with phones — not tablets — in mind.

At least that means there is a huge untapped market with little to no competition (the Android tablet app market). That is good for any developer wanting to make some money.

I wish the people behind QuickOffice Pro HD would read the above and take note. Thus far they don't seem able to raise sufficient energy to put out an 'HD' version for the Nexus 7 - much to my annoyance. Thus I take my iPad rather than my Nexus 7 when I'm out and about on business.

I'm sure this will all be rectified at some glorious point in the future. Probably about the same time TFL figures out how to run a proper tube service. In the meantime my Nexus 7 isn't as useful to me as I thought it would be, and Hell (a.k.a. The Baker Loo Line) is still hotter than the Sun's core.

Ahhh...several disparate rants expertly combined. Very satisfying.

Back on the 4th when reading a Nexus 10 article:

I noticed the first comment was a guy (probably the owner :)) raving about some obscure tablet.

TabletSprint also offers the new Novo 10 by Ainol electronics, a 10 inch tablet with a Quad Core processor and am impressive 1920x1200 Liquid Crystal 10.1" screen (like iPad Retina display) for $269 and features 10-Point Multi-Touch, HDMI with 1080p (HD) output to a TV, Dual Cameras, Bluetooth, WiFi, Built-In GPS, a Micro-SD Memory Card Slot, a Micro-USB port, a Strong Battery (10,000 mAh), Android 4.1 O/S (Jelly Bean) and Google Play access (400,000+ Android Software Apps).

http://tabletsprint.myshopify.com/

At the time TabletSprint only had the Novo 7. But I just checked today and they have the listing for the Novo Hero 10.1 at $225 which supposedly came out on the 1st (even though, like I said, I had checked that site on the 4th...), and the Novo Captain 10.1 at $275 which comes out on the 30th.

That latter being the one with a supposedly Retina display. Specs at the bottom of the links.

It supposedly supports 3G/4G USB sticks like Virgin Mobiles.

There have always been cheap/junk Chinese tablets on places like eBay, but this thing looks like it might be the start of the "real" cheap tablets.

Its been getting good reviews over here in the UK and looks to be a serious contender.
