Anyone Heard of the Scent of the Departed?

This. Her room and particularly her bed are probably infused with the odors of her powder (which probably dusted off of her and into the fabrics in the room) and perfumes. When you heat up the room with your body heat and humidify it with your breath, those odors are released.

I had a favorite dog who slept on a particular bed for many years. After she died, I would occasionally comfort myself by burying my face in her bed and breathing warm moist air into it until it released some of her familiar doggie odor. Same thing.

Keep in mind, people rarely change matresses. The scents could have been deeply "infused" into the matress, and only become noticable after someone slept on the bed. As to the scent going away, after receving the same stimuli for a while, your brain will start to totally ignore it after a while.

No mystery, except why you seem to be so convinced this is something supernatural...

I have nothing better to do than sit here and make up stories. Thanks for calling me a total nutcase on medication. I had a witness. He remembers it clearly. The same thing happened twelve years ago when my very best friend died but I was in my office alone.

I am sure you have better things to do, and sometimes you go and do them.
Just now, you sit and make up stories, including the one that involves my calling you a total nutcase on medication. You are neither. Or if you are the latter, it's not working.
None of your last three sentences provides any reason to think otherwise.

The scent was up by the ceiling. Believe what you wish. Thanks.

Clearly, you smelled a ghost. No question about that. Could you also feel the smell, like it being cold?

Could you smell what the ghost was cooking?

Seriously though there is nothing here but your word and ability to change the story to keep evading reasonable answers.

Thank you, Roma.

Well, there you go. Hearsay evidence (no offense intended, Roma) proves that the "scent of the departed" must be real.

Glad you found the answer you'd already decided on.

Now, what kind of story will you make up next? Halloween is almost over, so you'll have to abandon the ghosties and turn your imagination to something else. Maybe psychic ability? Medical dousing? Scrying? Tarot cards?

I am fairly certain you will get the conformation bias you are looking for over on ATS or a ghost hunters forum.

So years ago my ex s/o were spending the night at his mother's house. The next morning HE asked me , "did you smell that last night?" and I said, "no; what?" and he goes, "wow; it was a really strong smell of old lady's bath powder or flowers. Do you want me to wake you up tonight if I smell it again?" and I said ok, feeling confident he dreamed it.
So that night he says, "Deranged! Wake up! Do you smell that?" and it was really strong: this scent of old perfume or flowers and it lingered. So he said "go away, granny!" and we fell right back to sleep, not discussing it.
Next morning we told his mother and all she said was, "yes; mama used to sleep in that bed." Nothing more was said.
Anyone hear of that? Oh; before I conclude. Window was closed; no flowers were in the room. If they had been , we would have removed them at bedtime thinking they'd disturb our rest. This came then left.

* grandma used to sleep in the bed, use powder and perfum before sleep or even bath scent
* with time the scent pervade the matress even in small quantity
* when the bed is cold scent stay in the matress
* when the bed get occupants it get warmer. Scents , fatty acid, and others escape in small quantity
* occupant smell it

test that hypothesis :D

ETA: should have read the thread somebody offered the same explanation

Quite. Deranged, you're not going to find what you want here. Try telling these tales on forums that believe in such rubbish and you'll find lots of people who'll confirm everything you want to believe in.

So you and your ex had to stand on the bed to smell it? I thought it woke you up. In any event, I'm picturing a bizarre night-time scene here.

"I had a witness. He remembers it clearly.
Sure you do. Sure he does."
You mean I lied twice? I saw him at a party a month ago and we discussed it. So you're saying I did not have a witness? This may mean you think having a witness makes me more credible which you don't like. His mother has died but he is still very much alive. What an attitude!
