iPhone 5

Over here a 5 or 6Gb cap would be a huge phone internet data plan.

Here in Germany there are several prepaid providers that give you monthly 5GB at full UMTS speed (up to 7.2 mbit/sec) per month, after that volume is used up it goes down to GPRS speed (64 kbit/sec) unlimited. Each month for about 20 Euros. It's what i use, since i can't get a regular DSL line here (no lines free in the distribution box on the street) and there is no cable here either.

Going on a regular plan with a 2-year contract or more and it gets even cheaper.

Greetings,

Chris

You can already get a wifi based solid state disk and take your cloud with you.
Yes, that sounds much more convenient than a tiny card that weighs a gram and is always in your phone. ;)

iPad Mini: What We Know

Go to the actual link for details on each of these:

Certainties

1. Smaller Screen -- The iPad Mini's display will be 7.85 inches across the diagonal. This is slightly bigger than the 7-inch tablets that former Apple CEO Steve Jobs loathed, but significantly smaller than the traditional iPad's 9.7-inch display. Apple component suppliers in Asia have suggested that they've received orders for 8 to 10 million of such touch panels.

2. No Retina Display
3. Lightning Port
4. Thinner Design

Possibilities

1. A6 Processor
2. Camera(s)
3. Storage --

Uncertainties

1. Cellular Data --
2. When --
3. How Much -

We'll find out more in 10 days on the 23rd.

Having owned every iteration of the iPhone (apart from 3G) since 2007, and an iPad 2 and 3, I can honestly say I have never once required or desired the ability to use a memory card in an iDevice.

If I’m travelling, then my final destination has always had either wifi, or at the very least a good 3G signal. Also, prior to travelling I always go through my music and ensure all my playlisted songs are on the device and not in the cloud – then I don’t have to worry about dead spots in coverage.

A memory card slot is simply not a selling point for me.

it's not really a selling point for me, either, but i would for sure *like* it if there was a memory card slot, just so that i never had to give a second thought to how much space my bad cameraphone pictures were taking up.

(to be fair, i actually take some pretty darned good phone pics)

So, you're surprised that we on an internet forum have no proof of the internal strategies of one of the largest companies in technology??

Really?

Yeah, really.

So why don't you quit making accusations you can't back up?

Yeah, those are pretty nice pics!

Some of us also use our cameraphones to record audio and video, and expandable memory comes in handy for that, too. Also, Android allows installation of apps onto the SD card, so you can add more functionality (like games, utilities, etc.) if you're into that kind of thing.

My S3 takes some pretty fine pics for a phone. :p

Might not be a whole lot for some, but I've got over 600 pics, 99 apps, 37 vids and 350 song loaded on my 16 GB model. Still have 3.5 GB available. I don't give capacity a second thought. Nor have I ever had to change a battery, for what it's worth.

And that's where we differ, I'd be concerned if I only had 3.5Gb left. On a slow night at work I could dl 3.5Gb just for fun. But I'm not normal. I can appreciate how most people aren't going to max out their memory. And I can appreciate how most people aren't going to want to have a second charged battery on hand. I get it.
What still seems odd to me is I thought Apple catered to the 95th percentile nerds I see myself as being. I thought their niche was outside "the average user". There's no shame in catering to the largest demographic. Sales keep companies afloat. What I will say is because of my perception of Apple in this regards I have no desire to spend my money on a "Mac". If the iPhone is Mac and the S3 is PC I'll save some cash and stay where I am.

In the context of an iOS device, I'm not sure what you could download that would consume 3.5GB and persist on the device. The experience is far different than what you apparently imagine.

Perhaps a movie or two in HD?

That was my first thought as well, but I believe the 'and persist on the device' is an important qualifier. Streaming that content is much more common these days than downloading.

That isn't to say however that people don't have use for a massive amount of local storage for things like HD video. My collection of Mystery Science Theater 3000 isn't available any longer on any streaming service, so I'll likely have two or three of those on a microSD when I get my smartphone. Yes, I sell cell phones and don't have a smart phone yet. I'm rocking an old Samsung Rant of all things.

An important note to lurkers, HD or even SD streaming services like Netflix will eat through all but the largest or unlimited data allocations and eat through it fast. Connecting to wifi is most certainly your friend if you plan on going through anywhere near 3.5GB a night.

Videos and pictures? Taken, not downloaded.

More iPad mini rumors:

http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-ipad-mini-price-329-20121022,0,710368.story

The base price for Apple's iPad mini tablet, widely expected to be announced Tuesday, could be set at $329, according to a report.

That would be significantly higher than the $250 price tag that was rumored last week and far more than Google and Amazon's base $199 price for their respective 7-inch tablets.

The 9 to 5 Mac tech news site, citing unnamed sources, said two other Wi-Fi-only versions of the tablet will also be available, going for $429 and $529. Additionally, the rumored tablet is expected to also be available in cellular-connected versions. These are expected to start at $459 and go up to $559 and $659.

The latest report contradicts last week's speculation that the iPad mini would start at $250 for an 8-gigabyte model.

The iPad mini, which may be officially dubbed iPad Air, is widely expected to be announced at an invitation-only event that Apple has scheduled in San Jose on Tuesday morning.
