2012 Debates

I can vouch for that. When I first opened my coffee shop I treated it like extra income but then on the 20th each month you have to start mailing checks and it can cause problems. Found its much much smarter to deposit sales tax into a separate account and only use it if you have to. I certainly don't consider it a part of paying my own or my business' taxes. I think of it as something nice I do for the state because that makes writing those checks a little easier.:)

Although this is a problem for businesses and they have to be very careful because if they end up short on any tax collected from customers or employees (w/h or FICA) the legal problems and penalties can be severe.

But I was referring to small cash business that collect sales tax without ever intending to report it.

Romney has effectively taken the 47% issue off the table last night as he said he was "completely wrong" about those comments
They're not "off the table" until he explains why he made them in the first place? Really, there are only two main avenues of explanation. Either he was pathetically stupid back in May and actually believed this, or he was pandering to rich people and suggesting that he would look after their interests over those of the "little people". Neither one is particularly flattering.

No, Mitt, you don't get a mulligan.

Yea thats just dishonest and ****** behavior IMO but I am sure its more common than I would like to admit.

I was going to buy a bar a few years ago and it had a liquor and beer license that required something like 60% of revenue come from the sale of food. Looking over the P&L sheets I noticed that the last month of the quarter the food sales would spike to around 90% of the revenue when the previous 2 months they had been in the 10 - 20% range. The owner was obviously cooking the books (pun intended) and in a rather obvious and shameful manor. I walked away from that deal.

I would love to see an extended Obama ad documenting Romney's blatant flip flopping over the past 6 months.

I would also like to see some Tea Party people interviewed regarding his latest charade of ideas.

Already done...

But it should probably be updated :D

The House of Usher? :D

"completely wrong" that is the only soundbite I need.

Announcer: Romney says that...
Clip: "completely wrong"
A: And then Romney wants to...
Clip: "completely wrong"
A: And finally, Romney thinks that you can't...
Clip: "completely wrong"
A: On November 4th, Do what is right.
Fasttalker: Paid for by Friends of Obama for President.

Well, some polls are in, and - as expected - there does seem to be some movement in Romney's direction, but just how much and how long-lasting is quite uncertain. Nate Silver breaks it down nicely.

However, at the markets (IEM and Intrade) it looks as if President Obama and Romney are back to their pre-debate WTA numbers. Actually, Obama is a little higher and Romney a little lower than the pre-debate snapshot (on IEM, at least). I think this likely is reflecting the fact that the more favorable than not jobs report is probably blunting any momentum Romney may have gotten from the debate. In addition, I don't think Romney did himself any favors by bringing the news back around to his 47% comments.

Anyone see the Chris Matthews meltdown? It was way awesome.

That's awesome. Matthews identifies a number of areas where Romney is an outright liar and points out that Obama should have called Romney on his lies and insincerity. I don't know if that would have been the best strategy but damn would I have liked to see Obama take on that smarmy liar. I can't blame Mathews. When you have someone like Romney who is so easily proven to be a bald face liar and to have had a different position for every policy, someone needs to make certain the public knows about it.

It's high school prank humor.;)

Sure, there's no deeper meaning to it beyond the fact that some people are just clueless, and I'm sure you could probably find conservatives who would say similarly stupid things. But I still found it funny. So here is some more silliness:

I saw this live, and Chris' comment that Obama doesn't watch cable TV shocked me, and my blood pressure rose 10 points I'm sure. His summary was spot on, I don't like the word "awesome" except for Hubble photos.

I agree with him that Obama would learn something from Hardball and the other shows. It's first grade stuff, for those who care.

I tire of Chris at times, but he is very good at what he does. I saw him shut down Michael Steele twice today, when he tried to snow Matthews. Pathetic, and Michael knew it, but credit to him that he tried anyway.

Rachel is excellent as an investigative reporter. I feel she gets a little too cerebral though with her humor, and at times it could be misunderstood by those not schooled in satire, much like here on JREF.

MSNBC is trying very hard, though there are a few cases here and there of over reaching. I was sad to see Olberman go, but in retrospect both he and Cenk really are not ready for MSNBC's slot. I still watch some of Cenk Uguyr on Current.

The photo is funny. The video was not about "cluelessness" actually. It was about a speaker using his presupposition to deceive the listener, in Gricean terms, "a lie". Lies are not humorous.

Asking "Was it unfair not to permit Obama to use his teleprompter?" is violating one of the basic rules of conversational transaction: "Do not lie" I do not mean that in a simpleminded sense, but in a logical/linguistic sense.

The question presupposes the existence of a teleprompter which belongs to Obama. The questioner was actually punking himself, by being dishonest and feeling the rush of a lie and its effect on the unwitting. The responders were trying their best to answer a question which they believed to have been posed in good faith. The listeners believed that a teleprompter existed because the questioner was informing them of this. Nothing funny about being lied to. This is a technique that religious zealots often use to trap unsuspecting people into all kinds of nefarious schemes.

ETA: I'm really curious why the right wing seems to have bought into the notion that there is something wrong with a politician using a teleprompter. Wasn't this started by Michelle Bachmann? I don't see why anyone would care what she thinks. Surely Romney uses one I would hope. He'd be a fool not to.

I quite honestly don't get this meme, and I am pretty sure the people in the video, not having lived in the republican echo chamber, don't either--which is why they just sort of humored the fool asking the silly question with their natural take on the principle of someone having access to one's own property. Duh?
