Wow, that is some screwed up ****.

Now, there's a side possibility - which I personally doubt - which is that in this case, Cuduggan2K2 is making up stories to annoy A+ and to push a different agenda. There's no way we can know this - unless the poster is actually tracked down and proven to be someone other than they claim.

However, in the realm of common decency, it would seem reasonable to assume that if someone says they were raped, to take them at their word. Apart from anything else, the consequences of disbelieving someone far outweigh the costs of giving them the benefit of the doubt.

There doesn't seem to be any question of that here, though. There was no claim that Cuduggan2K2 was lying. She just hadn't completed her reading assignment. I'm quite concerned about her reaction.

Doesn't the whole questioning and verifying anyone who makes a claim at victimhood run counter to the idea of a safe space for victims? Interrogating everyone who claims victim status does not seem like a safe space to me.

There is always that possibility, but the offence certainly appeared to be disagreeing or having an example that contradicted a pretty stupid standpoint.

The "fate worse than death" meme is precisely what rape support should be combatting. It goes back to Titus Andronicus and further - she's soiled, she's ruined, she'd be better off dead. Someone who's brave and resilient enough to rebuild their life is a rebuke to that viewpoint. It's something we rarely see in films or tv. If someone gets raped in Act one, then come Act three they're probably killed. At peace at last. It's a thoroughly bad way to look at things, but it can only be disputed by people with contrary experience, and the guts to talk about it.

The ban has been cancelled now, with a grudging half-apology. Whether she'll be back or not remains to be seen. Maybe in future she'll discuss her rape experience somewhere more receptive, like a drunken frat party.

Hhhmmm, looks like I spoke too soon about A+ being only an annoyance. They are cheering that they managed to force Vacula to resign from his position at the Secular Coalition for America. It looks like they've had their first casualty.

First beheading, I'd say. Here's Vacula's explanation. Vacula has been a targeted individual for time some now by the "free thought" rabblement. Jacobins, the lot of them! I'm sure there will be dancing in the streets and bonfires around guillotine this evening. To which I say, écrasez l'infâme!

I doubt it zooterkin. Would make an interesting experiment to make an account and then a sockpuppet to see what would happen to someone who isn't popular.

That's not necessary. They're inconsistent enough and we know it already.

Mod note: It's been brought to my attention that Cuduggan2k2 was possibly admitting to being a rape survivor in the post I banned them for. I read that post as a hypothetical; not them relating something that had actually happened to them. I've unbanned Cuduggan2k2 so that they can clarify for themselves which is the case. If I was wrong about how I interpreted that post, I'm truly sorry.

Admitting?

Well, you have Kill Bill, which I find quite positive from the feminist point of view. Seriolusly.

A+ can't have any future. Not as the important movement they're supposedly trying to be. It's like a cult, with very narrow minded views. If your standards about what is acceptable from other people are so narrow, your movement isn't going to grow.

And of course, the reason she was banned? Not reading the assigned material. And the person banning her didn't bother to closely read the post for which she was banned.

The "possibly" and the "I read the post as a hypothetical" are good. I mean, saying "The cost of being raped was that I lost trust in someone close to me..." is fairly ambiguous, right?

In any case, if it's not clear, step one should be ask first, act second.

In a way, but it replaces "dying as redemption" with the alternative "kill everybody who wronged you" idea. It's usually the "kill everyone who wronged my woman" starring Liam Neeson, but every now and again the woman gets to have her own revenge.

It's not so much what the views are - many of the ideas are quite reasonable in themselves. It's the wide-eyed certainty and fanatical denunciation of dissent that's the problem.

Matt Dillahunty has weighted in on his A+ forum kerfuffle in this longish (22 min.) video. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but the first part is a recap of the incident and he gets to his conclusions starting at about the 13:00 minute mark.

Dillahunty :

Has this incident changed my opinion about Atheism Plus? No. Has it changed my opinion about the A+ forum? Yes. We must be better than this.

Holy crap...I'm just speechless. That's horrible. What a bunch of f*****ds those mods are!

And apparently the assigned material is a 20 page core thread and all linked materials. This being something I quickly found out when trying to verify an inference that somewhere in there was something the mod considered to be proof positive that being raped is worse than being murdered.

Is there a Cliff Notes version? What kind of discussion forum gives you "assigned" reading? No, on second thought, don't tell me. I'm getting images of Mao era political re-education camps. Long live the glorious Age of Atheism Plus!

(Yeah, I know I compared them to the Jacobins above. I think 20th century doctrinaire communism is the better analogy, though, especially with those Orwellian memory holes. What's bizarre is the stuff they don't delete.)

the other day rebecca banned someone for disagreeing with her about bicycle safety. Her justification was:

the comment was ban worthy because he obviously didn’t bother to read the post before commenting. Simple as that.

I'll take your word for it. I don't click on skepchicks since just viewing their page puts a few cents in their pockets.

It's a good thing these people are only internet slacktivists and atheist conference circuit freeloaders that 99.9 per cent of the population have never heard of. If they ever had any real power, we'd be talking concentration camps and mass graves. I'm not exaggerating.
