However, regardless of the validity of CTs, isn't it still a good idea to not take anything you hear -- and yes that includes on the media but also the internet and books and CT sites too -- on faith? Well, it doesn't help that they have been told the UN is evil, not only by fellow tin-hatters, but also by people willing to manipulate them in order to create a political base for various purposes.

It serves some folks' purposes to feed paranoia over various issues at various times, and right now the "be afraid of your government" meme is handy.

The problem is, folks who aren't all that educated and feel rather powerless can take those ideas to extremes, like these soldiers in my neck of the woods who were caught in a terrorist plot to attempt to instigate, Manson style, a civil uprising by destabilizing the system.

Keep in mind that this is exactly what the DOJ and others warned about a few years ago, but they were so vigorously attacked for being unpatriotic -- how dare they suggest that soldiers might be vulnerable to extremist propaganda! -- that they were forced to retract.

But they were right all along, of course.

In a world where you already feel like you're not the master of your own fate, it actually makes emotional and psychological sense to suspect that those who do have power are in cahoots with other "elites" to gain even more power over you.
