He didn't use the software that was used to create the Obama birth certificate pdf file, but it is clear that the generation of bit masks is an automated process of some software that creates pdf files if the appropriate options are selected.

Not quite an exact replication of what is produced by the layers in the Obama COLB.
There are many anomalies. Here's one not dealt with by the above video -- the presence of white space surrounding most text in the O certificate.

There is nothing sinister there and certainly cnanot be taken as a sign of forgery its part of how they work.

I am not sure your sources go to what is the issue in this case. It's not surprising that a document file that contains a mixture of text and images would be translated to a pdf file that had multiple layers, some for text and some for images.

In this case the pdf file was created from a scan which presumably looked just like a plain image to the pdf file converter. But it turns out that some pdf converters are smarter than, I at least, would have guessed. The pdf creation software in question here has the ability to find text like parts of the image and create layers which store bit masks for those areas of the image.

The bit mask layers are not exactly like layers that would be created by image editing software where layers are created that contain different elements of the image so that they can separately edited. Bit mask layers are layers that store information about where the pdf conversion software has detected bits in the same color that might be text that is on the image. I didn't know anything about this before this discussion, but it does look like an ingenious way of making pdf files of scanned documents be capable of reproducing the text within the document at a high resolution while the JPEG quality and resolution is kept at a lower setting so that a PDF file can produce highly legible text and still remain small.

A key point about all this is that the pdf creation software that was used to create the pdf files of Obama's birth certificate had the ability to detect text like portions of the image and create layers to store that text in automatically when the software was run with common image optimization parameters selected.

A second point here, I think, is that a person without any technical background on the capabilities of pdf file creation software assumed some sort of bizarre conspiracy theory as the reason for the nature of the file without considering the possibility that the pdf conversion software might have functioned differently than she assumed. And her published, uninformed speculation has now taken on a life of its own and the true believer birthers have added one more bogus piece of analysis to their arguments.

The document started as a paper copy (you can read the correspondence from the head of the Hawaii State Department of Health regarding the copying of the birth certificate from state records to security paper that were then certified by the state registrar to deliver to Obama here). The paper copy was then shown to reporters at the press conference who got to handle it and feel the raised seal (and one even snapped a picture of it). .[/QUOTE said:

Anomaly = something the conspiracy theorist doesn't understand. In the real world "anomalies" are not proof of some specific conclusion such as an accusation of forgery. Birthers are slowly learning this at the hands of the judicial system, but not fast enough.

I ws just pointing out how pdfs acutally work as reference point, all PDFS have layers so to find layers in a PDF is not a sign of it being a forgery.

Expert testimony offered by someone who is not an expert. Unless perhaps you can provide me that list I asked for of the cases or documented in which Mara Zebest has previously acted as an adjudicable expert in the forensic analysis of images or documents, and the forensic detection of forgery. Do you have that list?

And to test your own knowledge of PDFs and related image technology, please explain in your own words, Robert, the difference between a bit mask, an image mask, and a pixel map.

Way back on May 11, 2011, I took a cursory look at some claims made by WND’s Jerome Corsi about an alleged investigation by Kenyan authorities into the president’s birth story.

Corsi alleged that the former U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Michael Ranneberger, in July 2008 wrote a letter to Emmanuel Kisombe, Kenya’s permanent secretary of Kenya’s ministry for immigration and registry of persons, in which Ranneberger asked Kisombe to look into whether any records existed showing that President Obama was born in Kenya.

Well, now I think I know the answer.

There wasn’t one.

Shortly after making that post, I sent a Freedom of Information Act request to the State Department, asking for Ranneberger’s letter.

It took more than a year, and a few semi-threaty letters from me, but I finally received a response from the DOS’s Sheryl L. Walter:

Based on the subject matter of your request, we searched the records systems most likely to maintain responsive records: The Bureau of African Affairs and the Central Foreign Policy Records System. After a thorough search of these systems conducted by professional employees familiar with their contents and organization, no records responsive to your request were located.

Quite the pickle, huh?

So it’s no longer about Corsi producing the 2008 Ranneberger letter. Now Jerome has to prove that the Kisombe letter, in which Ranneberger’s is referenced, is real.

So how about it, Jerome? The ball is in your court. Do you have proof that these letters were written, or are you just a gasbaggy liar?

I bet I know the answer.

I would hope not. The Constitution is quite clear on the requirements for the office of President. I believe the Constitution should be amended to change those requirements to something similar to the requirements to be a US Senator or Representative, but as long as the requirements exist I'm strongly in favor of their being respected. So for now former Governors Jennifer GranholmWP and Arnold Schwarzenegger are ineligible to the Presidency.
