Mitt Romney would restore 'Anglo-Saxon' relations between Britain and America

As the Republican presidential challenger accused Barack Obama of appeasing America's enemies in his first foreign policy speech of the US general election campaign, advisers told The Daily Telegraph that he would abandon Mr Obama’s “Left-wing” coolness towards London.

In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr Obama, whose father was from Africa.

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”.

Mr Romney on Wednesday embarks on an overseas tour of Britain, Israel and Poland designed to quash claims by Mr Obama’s team that he is a “novice” in foreign affairs. It comes four years after Mr Obama’s own landmark foreign tour, which attracted thousands of supporters.

Mitt’s First Foreign Stumble?

It’s treacherous for a US presidential candidate to travel overseas — lots of opportunities for mis-chosen words and getting drawn into other countries’ domestic politics. With Mitt Romney about to leave on his big trip abroad he may already have had his first big foreign stumble. At a GOP fundraiser in San Francisco last night, Romney said that Australia’s foreign minister had warned him that foreign leaders see the US in decline and — at least in Romney’s telling — was hoping for Romney-like policies to make things right.

That at least was the version of the comments that appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald. A similar version, but without the full quotes, appeared in the AP.

Quoting Romney: ”And this idea of America in decline, it was interesting [Carr] said that, he led the talk of America being in decline. See that’s not talk we hear about here as much as they’re hearing there. And if they’re thinking about investing in America, entrepreneurs putting their future in America, if they think America’s in decline they’re not gonna do it.”

Whether or not the SMH got it right is one question. The Hill notes that the pool reports did not have Romney clearly characterizing the comments as a warning.

And now, Australia’s Foreign Minister’s office has come forward to shoot down Romney’s characterization of the discussion, calling Romney’s interpretation “not correct.”

. . .

Whatever Carr said, he almost certainly didn’t expect Romney to turn around and use it as ammo in a political speech.

That's quite an auspicious start! Let's see what other goodies the rest of his trip brings. :D

Regardless of party, no presidential candidate in their right mind should ever describe "America in decline."

O'Bama's mama was of Irish descent, IIRC.

A Celtic bloodline didn't seem to deter Ronald Reagan.

...but, yeah, Romney's engaging in some Grade A dickotry.

Quite the tour there. Britain, Israel and Poland. I doubt the masses even in the UK and Poland will greet him with flowers. Maybe in Israel, if he doesn't decide to do some "Tear down this wall!" stunt trying to imitate Reagan. ;)

Well, wasn't Kenya a former totally owned piece of the Empire? And Ireland, too! And any Yanks in the tank also qualify.

Lol....what? When did that happen?

The administration supporting Argentina's position over negotiations regarding the "Maldives" (Obama's bushism not mine). Heck, why even (try to) call them the Malvinas instead of the Falklands?

Because that's what the Argentine's call them and they get pissed when someone calls them the Falklands?

From the first article:

The advisers spoke on the condition of anonymity because Mr Romney’s campaign requested that they not criticise the President to foreign media.

Seriously!?

Well, criticising a sitting President on foreign soil didn't work out so well for the Dixie Chicks, now did it? It would be interesting to see what the right wing's reaction would be if Romney does indeed criticise Obama on foreign soil. Will they send him death threats like they did the Dixie Chicks? Will C&W radio ban his ads from ever playing on their airwaves? The skeptic in me seriously doubts that...

As a personal side note - I happen to like the Dixie Chicks and think that the song "Not Ready to Make Nice" is a very well written piece. It says a lot about the state of political discourse in this country.

I liked their stuff before the whole dust-up too. I don't like much "country" music because, well, it's nothing like what I grew up with. We had an old road house in what was then rural Illinois, and the juke box was always playing. And I could hear it where I slept (especially in summer with the windows all open) and country music filled my dreams. (And people wonder why I'm so weird.)

But yeah, criticism of Obama on foreign soil won't sit well. Neither will crap like having his surrogates do it for him.

And why respect that over:

a) the wishes of the people who live there

b) the UK

Answer: Left wing coolness!

Correct Answer: Knowing your audience.

When he's talking to the UK or the people that live there, I'm sure he'll say Faroe Islands when he meant to say Falkland Islands.

In any event, that's a distraction… on a clear case of UK sovereignty and self determination, the US is backing Argentina's position (i.e. negotiations) over that of the UK (i.e. the matter is settled - unless/until the Falkland Islanders decide otherwise).

That's not "knowing your audience", that's picking a side.

They call them the Malvinas, not the Maldives, so it is possible that Obama was doing a nudge-nudge wink-wink to the Queen.

As it happens, the "special relationship" is mostly an illusion that right-wing newspapers in the UK want to believe in so they tend to go a bit wild for whoever is selling the right wacky baccy.

Does anyone in the US actually take this "special relationship" seriously?
