Hooray! Libya is Free! Boo! Egypt is Free!

It's "look, there are elections in Libya, that's good because our criminal bombing of the country back into the stone age never happened, look at all the smiling people with paint on their fingers! Yay for us!"

They were liberated! From fascists with bad culture! Hooray! :)

Unlike in Egypt where fascists with bad cultrue have siezed power through the ballot box! Boo!

The difference is the huge investment made in Libya and the need to have any good news to show for it. Ergo, anything that can be spun as good news will be.

Also, no one of the Jamahiriya ideology is allowed to run, or sometimes even to remain at liberty or to live, with all their body parts. So that's progress towards assimilation into the hyper-capitalist world economy, and it's progress we can all be proud of (says the corporate-owned media). It's good to give people choices, so long as the choices are limited.

Did Obama say that the MB winning the elections in Egypt was "bad"?

No he did not. And of course there is no contradiction between approving the fact that countries hold free elections and criticizing the winning parties for their proposed or subsequent policies.

Given the current state of the political process in Egypt there is little chance short term they will implement any policies at all

All the little lefties are bitter because they supported Gaddafi and lost.

Ha Ha. Sucked in.

I expect that there will be a period where the Brotherhood and Army compete for control of various aspect of government. Barring a coup, the army will eventually lose in this fight. (A similar process have happened in Turkey in the last decade.)

In any case my main point was that there is no contradiction between approving elections as a method to determine who governs, and criticizing a government based on its positions and policies.

Sure, I agree with that. But there were plenty of people, Virus included, who seemed appalled by the idea of the people of Egypt getting the vote as they would end up voting for undesirables. On the other hand, would Virus be upset if the Libyans vote for the same undesirables?

I say "would" because I may have spoken too soon. The AP seems to be predicting victory for non-Islamists which is good and hopeful if it is actually true.

The interim prime minister for Jabril's National Transitional Council, Abdurrahim El-Keib (who actually replaced Jabril in that position, when Jabril became the Chairman of the NTC), was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Alabama for 20 years. There were even a number of articles about that in the local paper, when he was elected to that position.

I'm unsure of what you are trying to say Childlike Empress. I, for one, am glad Libyans are finally allowed to decide their future and elect men like Jibril, no longer under the boot of a murdering dictator. I don't find that criminal, nor did the UN.

I'm saying that the bruhaha about this sham "election" is a fig leaf to ensure people like you keep believing that Libya is now better off than with the system they had. Which couldn't be further from the truth.

Really, do they? Frankly, i'm not interested in discussing this at the moment, it sickens me to the stomach. Read the article i've posted for a start. The social fabric of this country, until last year the one with the highest living standards in all of Africa, and with a direct democracy designed to fit the tribal roots of the land, is utterly destroyed. It's a tragedy.

So, let me get this right; the MB win elections in Egypt; that's bad because they are undemocratic. The MB win elections in Libya; that's good because it is democracy.

It's good that the people of Tunisia (don't forget them!), Libya, and Egypt have the opportunity to change their government without bloodshed regardless of who wins each election. This pattern should extend to Syria, the sheikhdoms, and Iran and millions more would benefit.
