I just had to post this, the tax is only five days old and:

The ABC has been told Labor is considering dumping the floor price or significantly modifying it, despite public reassurances from Climate Change Minister Greg Combet that "we intend proceeding with what we agreed".

"The carbon tax has only been in place for five days, and already they're talking about how to fix it," Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said.

Well, if nothing else, at least the left is acknowledging the power of markets to drive innovation.

Previously, they didn't acknowledge its power, but still relied on harnessing it to derive tax money all the while decrying it. This is an improvement.

We're not calling it a tax. it's a carbon price - Julia

Don't worry Alfie.
It will all come out in the wash once a market price takes over.

Like how much the effort will help the world emissions?
Like how much the deadly temperature increases will be mitigated?

Like answers to these claims by Gillard?

A one metre rise would see a million people in our region on the move.

One metre? Really? And one million in our region? Wow!
Where does she get this info from?

Did you know that a two metre rise will mean 25 million will have to move? One hundred metres means that Noah will refloat a boat. :)

Our country faces very direct threats too: worsebushfire conditions and droughts, more days of extreme heat, increased cyclone intensity, bleaching of coral reefs.

I would love some hard evidence for these claims and how imposing a tax will mitigate this alarmist nonsense.

Climate change is a global issue that threatens us here, so we are doing our bit.

This part is true. We sure are doing our bit - we are doing more than our bit - we are ahead of the rest of the world with a tax that that is triple some other falling markets.

Second, our carbon price will not only cut carbon pollution – it will strengthen our economy.

Orly?
Do tell.

I can see the world changing to cleaner sources of energy right now and I know we must not be left behind.

Piffle. She should show us what she "sees" not what she hopes is true.

There is a clear threat to our future prosperity if our economy does not keep up.

There certainly is, so why impose a tax that will actually make us less competitive?

More of her lies can be found here...

Worst PM ever.

Wrong.

See, unlike some, I can look at evidence and change my mind.

Great! Having done so much research in order to change your own mind you could of course, support Gillard's claims as above and respond to some of my concerns.

I am certain that the evidence will be compelling given your almost famous discernment and intellect in these types of topics.

I eagerly await your considered thoughts for my education and edification.

Your humble student.

Unfortunately willful ignorance just can't be easily countered.

But good for you. Keep on channelling Alan Jones and Lord Monckton. I'm sure eventually you will convince people here.

But if not, there's always the Herald Sun website.

Predictable.

Groupthink remain alive and well in you LK.

as oposed to the groupthink in the deniers camp?
one group thinks alike based on evidence the other group think alike based on paranoid conspiracy theories.

Basically every single major scientific organisation agrees that the earth is warming and that it is very likely that we are driving it through greenhouse gas emissions. If the earth is hotter, you will see more days of extreme heat, more bushfires, more droughts etc. A carbon tax can reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions and thus mitigate the effect of global warming.

How will Australia's carbon dioxide tax help?
By how much will it help the climate and how quickly?
Given Lionking has predictably run away from the discussion, perhaps you can respond to my concerns around our Prime Ministers assertions above?

If carbon dioxide is taxed, people will consciously try to avoid using it when they don't have to, and will use less of it where possible when they do have to. Realistically it's not going to have a huge effect, but every little helps, and as a species we need to collectively do everything we can to avoid ruining the one planet we have. I don't know what your prime minister has claimed in terms of how fast climate change will happen and how much this will help avoid it, but she is right if she claims that this will reduce the effect of climate change and that climate change has the potential to cause serious problems if not addresses.

Run away? Where have you been for the past six months?

Whatever.

The point that almost everybody gets is that this carbon price will encourage industries to move to less polluting technologies.

Simple. Just like the mindset of some.

If they really wanted to drive innovation, give tax breaks to companies that improve efficiency via innovation.

Or a complete, 20 year tax moratorium on all profits from any new systems developed.

By requiring not just efficiency, but efficiency through technological innovation, they will avoid, mostly, problems with gameification where they make themselves less efficient so they can make themselves more efficient.
