TAMbassadors Call

I will do that. And, if anyone hears of another firstTAMer woman who wants a tour beforehand, like on Wednesday, or just wants to meet someone to hang with, I'm game.

Good idea even for those just unfamiliar with South Point. Last year I gave Elizabeth Loftus a pre-TAM tour that she said she appreciated once the crowds arrived.

Ooh. That's a good idea. Hotel tours a couple times per day on Wed and Thurs?

Ha! Missed the earlier thread, did you?

Thinking about the Ambassador idea some more: If you had enough people, you could also set up a regular schedule of Ambassador Tours. At fixed times, a group of Ambassadors will meet at Location X, and anyone who would like an introduction the the TAM experience can meet them, and have a tour that shows them where all the important things are: Registration Desk, Conference and Lunch Rooms, the Del Mar, and the locations of other events like Poker and the Drinking Skeptically.

We could also let the "Celebrity" guests know about this, so if an Ambassador sees a Name Skeptic as they're leading a tour, they can flag them down and introduce them to the group. Lots of newbies seem too intimidated to do that themselves. I introduced at least one guy to Randi, and another to Brian Dunning last year because of this.

I quickly checked the names on the Tambassador list and 5 are female. Any first Tammers (or multi-tammers) who feel uncomfortable should be able to find one of us pretty easily. I cannot speak on behalf of men on the list but I have personally met all but one of them and I trust them all enough to put my name on the Tambassador list with theirs.

I don't know, I've met that Saganite person, and she's a bit dodgy.

I'm sending an email now to call attention to this thread with Brian and Carrie at JREF. I think the idea Brian had about some official buy-in on this idea would be advisable (and not hard to do).

Thanks Krelnik. Before Carrie was hired I was not sure who to contact when DJ did not reply.

My biggest concern is their support of the word "Tambassador". Since we were previously called volunteers IMO it would need to be clear to everyone that we are not employees and do not officially speak for the JREF.

Agree. We definitely need to clear this with the JREF.

If it makes a difference to Carrie or any of the other JREF reps...I already ordered TAMbassador buttons. Needless to say I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they okay the name -- otherwise I'll be forced to get rid of them by leaving them at restaurants in place of tips and handing them out to trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

Sounds like an invitation to get your house teepeed. :)

Thanks for moving out on this. I look forward to seeing them, and I'll be happy to help with the cost. They'll make excellent souvenirs in any case. Never have enough buttons.

Noooo! I'll buy them all! Then I'd be 10x Tambassador!

Hey, I went to the 1st TAM (can I brag? I can still wear one of the dresses I wore back in 2003, I still have it and I wear it regularly, and I have the pictures to prove!), and that gives me certain rights.

We could make it clear that we're unnoficial TAMbassadors. We're just there to provide practical info, no strings attached.

This, or we could make a game out of sneaking the pins onto the backs of people who try to push religious tracts on us or glare at us disapprovingly in the elevator (this has happened to pretty much every TAM attendee at some point, right?). Wish we'd had them last year when that Chuck Norris convention was being held right across the hall.

That was quite a moment--Richard Dawkins warning us not to go out into the hall to avoid running into Chuck Norris or his acolytes. :D
