Hypothetically.

What should a film star attached to a religion that is famous for hounding it's enemies (does that even differentiate it from other religions?) do if allegations of homosexual encounters surface? (No poll)

I think this would be the perfect time to come out. You could apologize and thank your wife for her support, leave a nutjobby blackmaily religion and finally be yourself and start being truly happy.

Or attack, attack, attack, stay married in a sham marriage and never be happy and never be yourself.

I think that, given this hypothetical scenario, the degree of cognitive dissidence to be overcome is probably overwhelming. :(

I never took cognitive dissonance into account. I made the assumption that the actor knew he was living a lie but due to external forces (a nutjob religion who were prepared to, or at least threaten to, spill the beans on all the actors confessions, a messy divorce and loss of standing with his fans) was unwilling to make the jump.

It could be that he is--well, I don't know--not gay. I don't agree with taking legal action against people who claim that one is gay, because it not only is produced by the stigmatization of LGBT's but also reproduces such stigmatization. Nonetheless, I don't understand why the sole reason for taking legal action must be that he is gay.

Is this in response to the claims of the masseurs sp? I think the legal action is because they are claiming to be sexually assaulted. Whether he is gay or not does not change that. The OP is now asking if he should come out, in light of these allegations.

There is something of a false dichotomy at work in the OP. Travolta's marriage might not be a sham at all, even if he also enjoys sex with men.

Also, his religion might be a sincerely held belief. We may think it's cracked, but it's obviously worked for him so far.

That seems like it would be impossible to demonstrate. We'd need a non-religious version of Tron Javolta to compare to.

Who knows if he would have made that dog of a movie, "Battlefield Earth," if the book hadn't been written by his prophet?

On top of that, the OP is assuming that he is gay in the first place. I think all we really know at this point is that he has an affinity for masturbation and molesting padded tables. Perhaps also a little voyeurism while performing these acts.

What I don't understand is how these allegations even made the news. Isn't Scientology supposed to make one at cause over the MEST Universe? Presumably these masseurs are part of the MEST Universe, couldn't JT have simply used his Operating Thetan super-powers?

Sexually asaulting someone the same sex does not entail that the perpetrator is same-sex oriented. Sexual assault is often about power and not sex or erotic desire.

he's gayer than I am, sets my gaydar off on defcon 1 whenever hes on the box
+ has purty mouth
this is what, his third allegation
there's more chance of Kevin Spacey being straight than there is Travolta, it might just be that Kevin was completely heterosexual minded when robbed of his mobile phone while out walking his little dog in a notorious gay cruising spot back in 04 at 04:30 in the AM

Who the **** cares?

It's nobody's business what someone's sexual orientation is, and it's nobody's business if a person chooses not to come out - except that person's spouse, if any.

I'm much more inclined to badmouth Travolta for his repellent religion because, unlike being gay, it actually hurts people.

What?

normally I'd agree with you, but not when theyre public figures who earn a living from peoples opinion of them
;)

One of the levels in Scientology is Operating Thetan. These guys are supposed to be able to control the universe and what happens in it. If JT was an OT, he should have been able to keep these allegations from coming to life.

Assuming those super-powers, it could be he wanted this to come out. Probably his publicist pointing out his failing career and how a bit of news could put him back in the tabloids.

Hmm, I guess, I care because I looked at this thread. I was curious whether Travolta was gay, so sue me.

Unfortunately, the thread consists mostly of wisecracks and one person complaining that it is none of our business (I agree with that) and little probative* information on the subject.

I notice that Marduk seems convinced. I am never quite sure what to make of this kind of thing. I think I have some idea about the nature of people but on many aspects of the human condition I am probably naive. Maybe the available evidence is enough to draw a conclusion and I just am out of the loop on what real life is like.

Yeah, but people do seem to enjoy the social aspect of it and I think it's going a bit far to blame the average Scientologist about the extremes of their leadership. I don't walk around blaming Catholics for the inquisition or priest/young boy sex. Still, celebrities in Scientology do seem to get special treatment and maybe it's not quite valid to lump celebrity Scientologists with average Joe Scientologists either.

*accidental pun and I'd like to think a little beneath me, but I notice I left it in so my self image just took a bit of a hit.

He's also bald!

Whoa, didn't know that. Doesn't that preclude the possibility that he's gay?
